WIW: Friday Night Dinner - YouLookFab Forum

Here is what I wore for a very casual family Friday night dinner at the hotel where most of the out of town family will stay during this weekend's festivities around our nephew's wedding.

Toffee topper - Laura, pre-pandemic
Beige sweater -- H&M, a few years old
Olive ponte pants - Winners, a year or two ago -- who knows?
Sneakers -- OluKai
Necklace -- Lucky Brand

The topper was only worn to and from the venue. It's too big on me now, but I love the colour and vibe, even too big, so will milk it as much as I can this fall. I only cooled down enough to wear it today. We've had summer temps until now.

GIven how short I am on essentials like lightweight tops for layering, and that I'm trying to make do without really buying new pants yet, I think this turned out "okay". I didn't feel awesome in it, but I didn't feel terrible either, so I'll call it a win.

I do like wearing the cognac sneakers with the cropped (well, hem rolled) pants.

Anyway, thanks for looking. Comments and suggestions for improvement always welcome.

The pants look neat and structured so you can get away with the topper being oversized (anyway it could be taken in along the sleeve and shoulder line? Or perhaps scrunching up the sleeves a bit more?)
So nice to see those sneakers again too.

Beautiful outfit! I love the color palette on you. The coat looks great - to my eye a modern fluid tailored shape. These can go a little oversized. The large necklace is the icing on the cake. You look gorgeous.

Slim cat, star, Katerina, Brooklyn - I can't remember the last time I wore a necklace, and I'm glad I remembered I had that one. The outfit needed 'something' -- especially without the topper -- and a scarf would have been too warm.

Lozz - I wonder if it could be taken in successfully? Never really considered that. Will chew on that!

I so appreciate everyone's enforcement that it's a good outfit - and I should be clear that I do like it. I just would have preferred to have some other options for this particular event. (ie a lighter weight sweater, or maybe a colourful blouse).

Because I'm working as much as possible with what I have until my weight stabilizes, it means I don't have the variety of choices I might have preferred. And I have a lot of "well, these pants work, but there's not a top that works with them that is also suited to my needs for the evening..." so it took a bit of back and forth to find pieces that worked together and weren't going to be TOO hot, too casual, etc!

I think that’s the kind of topper than can be a little oversized without looking “too big.” Great casual outfit. The necklace really takes it up a notch.

Thanks, everyone. My topper appreciates the love and is happy to hear that being a bit oversized isn't relegating it to the donate pile just yet. As a a shortly-before-the-pandemic purchase it has only had a handful of outings.

kkards, maybe the coat does have a slight blush tone to it -- I think it comes out more in photos, but it's entirely possible. Of course, colour is so relative -- it looked a bit too golden compared to a taupey beige skirt I am considering pairing it with.

You look so cute! I can see why you want to keep wearing that coat. The oversized look is great. I like the rolled hem styling of the pants, probably better than if you had them shortened.

The layered light colours are very flattering, and I agree the warm tones set off your hair beautifully. Maybe the upcoming holiday season will be a good time for a new ‘party’ outfit or dressy capsule in your urgent size?

I really love this on you! I can see why you are loathe to give up the long cardigan. There is something so dramatic yet so easy about that type of sweater (I'm a huge fan of duster length cardis) and this one is quite elegant. The necklace adds texture and interest. Sneakers are fab!

Suz -- Thank you! This cardigan is almost like a heavy, textured micro-suede -- but not with a suedelike feel, if that makes sense. It is not quite cardigan and not quite coat... Anyway, I'm glad you share my love for the duster length!

Carla -- I will definitely keep a more conscious eye on dressier wear and see if I can snag a few more pieces so I am occasion ready the next time something special comes up! Maybe I'll try thrifting as so many fabbers seem to have luck finding dressy pieces that way without breaking the bank.
