Frühschoppen is the austrian interpretation of a brunch and it usually happens after a 6am mass. It's a countryside tradition; people wear dirnld and lederhosen... I am still skeptical about being able to pull off a dirndl (After all, I was not born in Austria and I am a 70A), so I choose classic, feminine outfits for those occasions instead.

Starring: my blue suede pumps! (Please forgive the lightning once again) 28 degrees Celsius, Sunny wth intermitent clouds.

(I ditched the blazer as soon as I arrived at the heuriger. Far too hot... Below the blazer, I had just a basic white layering top.)

Very nice! I've been to a lot of Frühschoppen myself, but I have never in my life worn a dirndl. I'm coming from a wine-growing district and Frühschoppen (with wine NOT beer) is a tradition there too. But as a German who's not from Bavaria I'm not all that enarmoured of wearing a dirndl.

Oh and Frühschoppen comes from the past, when men would go to the local taproom for a 'Schoppen' directly after early morning mass (in der 'Frühe' - in the early morning). Depending on where you were, drinking local brew meant drinking beer or wine. Schoppen is an old liquid measure, meaning half a liter. At home we have several versions of Schoppen - more water than wine and more wine than water, for those that can take a bit more.

@Parsley: as Astrid said, 70A is the European equivalent of a 32AA Bra size.

@Astrid: Hello! I have just yesterday seen a post from you; I didn't know you lived in Berlin. Newbie@YLF here. In Austria, we too have different mixtures (wine + water, wine + almdudler, wine + hollunder syrup etc...) in different proportions (but anything that has more water/almdudler or syrup than wine is considered a children's mix. Hehehe) I know you mentioned you're not a dirndl type of gal, but check this shop out anyways: http://dirndlherz.at/. Their versions of this traditional clothing are so much fun: they use bold, rock-y prints and I already fell in love with a few models. (There's one in camel and black with a dog print - you can see it on the slideshow in the homepage - that I find just awesome!)

Fruhschoppen! I haven't heard that in a long time. I actually own 3 dirndls (my Mom is German but we spent a lot of time in Austria). This reminds me to wear mine again.

Your outfit is very beautiful and elegant. The black and white theme is soooo on trend, I love that!

Astrid your comments are interesting about the dirndl. I think it wasn't until my family made it a practice to attend the Salzburg Music Festival that we all got dirndls. My Mother is originally from the North, between Leipzig and Berlin. You were sort of expected to wear them to the music events, that was in the 70s at least. My three dirndls are all hand-me-downs from my Mom and my sister.

Yes, I've been living in Berlin for almost four years now. The dirndls in the shop you linked to are great, I can see the appeal. The one with the dogs is cute! I really like the "Glitzermoos" one, very classy. I actually would have an occasion to wear one this year, I'm going to be visiting Oktoberfest for the first time ever. But it's still not going to happen.

@Astrid: To which Oktoberfest are you going? München? Despite all the tourist appeal of it, traditional black-white-green/black-white-and-red and black-white-and yellow dirndls are on every girl's body: from old timers Oktoberfest goers to the youngest teens. I have my reservations (and harsh critique) of the Oktoberfest in München, but it is certainly something worth seeing once and I think you get a good excuse to try at least once to wear a dirndl (Ya know: the best "I've been there, done that"-style). Hehehe. Have fun and write more about it here once you go/come back later this year.

Yes, the one in München. My oldest friend (I've know her since kindergarten) now lives in München because she studies there. We haven't been in close contact for a while but she's coming for a visit soon and I'll visit her during Oktoberfest. So I'm not going there only for Oktoberfest, but of course it's a good opportunity to have a look. But a dirndl is out all the same, I just don't have the money to buy something I'd likely wear only once.

One of my grandmothers was German. You'd never know; my peeps left for the New World in the 1840s and we know nothing about nothing. Still, I had my *German dresses,* and my dad had lederhosen.
