WIW: For a court hearing

I'm a volunteer advocate for a couple of foster children. I have to go to court twice a year. We were told to look professional, no jeans, etc. While I was waiting, I noticed this more detailed list of no nos!

I'm wearing my thrifted chartreuse wool jacket, navy Lands End pants, striped navy and white Lands End tee, Born grey booties, and vintage grey Coach bag. I tied my long navy tie dyed scarf into an infinity scarf as someone suggested earlier. I was also trying for a column of color.

What do you think? All suggestions are welcome!

I think you look perfectly appropriate and credible. How did you learn how/where to be an advocate for foster children, if I can ask?

IK, I have a friend who works for the court system, and whenever we got together she would talk about it. So she recruited me. I've been with these kids for three years. It requires training, fingerprinting, etc.

Yes it is rewarding. I visit the kids at their foster homes, meet their school counselors and teachers, and take them on outings. I read all the reports from social services. I always say if they made a movie of their lives, you wouldn't want to see it because it would be too sad.

That sign kills me - it's like the one in the walk-in clinic near my house (which is in a nice area) - that says any physical abuse against staff will not be tolerated! Amazing the things we as a society need to be told!

I am so glad you made time for this. Life is so very unfair, and it is even more awful when children are at the brunt of it.

This was family court. While I was waiting I saw quite a few people dressed inappropriately - torn jeans, graphic tees, tennis shoes. Some people were there hoping to keep or get back custody of their children. I would think they would want to impress the judge that they are good sober upstanding citizens. It's really surprising.

The real heroes are the foster parents. They have the children 24/7 (except for school), and along with therapists try to mend them. Children are in foster care for many reasons, but often it's because the birth parents have done really terrible things to them.

One funny thing: going into the courthouse, I had to go through security. This was the first time my hair was fully grey. The deputy sheriff saw my ID and asked why I was there. I told him and went through the metal detector which went off, probably because of my shoes. He waved me on. I think my hair made me look more trustworthy!

JAileen, I was going to ask if you were a CASA, but you already answered my question. (How funny/sad is it that they have to remind people that bare midriffs and flip flops are not okay in the courtroom?) I'm sure you looked as good as all the attorneys -- well done!

You are doing a wonderful thing Jaileen and you look perfectly presentable for the job. In line with some other recent discussions on the forum, I try not to judge the way people dress at court so quickly - as you know some people have back stories that make dressing to show respect the last thing on their minds or possibly beyond their means.
