WIW: experimenting with a different-for-me silhouette

The pullover-over-buttondown silhouette is a very classic combination, but one which I've never really worn much. I've always felt like it was just a bit too classic for me. However, I have been wanting to wear my buttondowns (specifically, my J Crew Liberty ones) more, so I tried pairing it with a simple cream cashmere pullover and quite liked the result.

Question: What do you all do with your sleeve cuffs when you wear this type of combo? My shirt and pullover had similar length sleeves and the two layers were kind of bulky and awkward, so I folded up the pullover sleeve to show some of the shirt cuff.

No expert but I like the neckline of your pullover with the shirt better than the traditional V neck. My shirts tend to hang longer beneath the sweater but I don't know what is proper length. I like this silhouette on you.

Leave the pullover sleeve un-cuffed for less bulk.

Angie, it happens that this pullover and shirt have exactly the same length sleeves so it actually somehow felt bulkier uncuffed. Plus I wanted to see more of the pattern.

I like this. It's such a pretty shirt. I probably wouldn't cuff the sleeve of the sweater, just tug on it a little, and spread the excess up and down the arm to show the cuff of the shirt.

I typically think of this look as too bulky and too preppy -- but you've made it work so well on you. I like that sweater a lot -- your own production?

I would cuff the sweater as you have. Ideally, for me, the sweater sleeves are several inches shorter, and I like to leave the shirt cuffs unbuttoned so they hang out and are a little floppy (but still held in by the sweater cuff). It helps keep it all a little insouciant, if you know what I mean.

I love this classic look. It looks great on you.

What about folding the cuff of the shirt over the pullover? Or would that be too bulky? I also like the look of scrunched sleeves but they never seem to stay that way when I have tried it.

Diana, I like the the pattern peeking through too. I scrunch the sleeves of the pullover a little for that to happen.

This looks great. Just right. Neat and tidy as Angie says. You could turn up the sweater cuff just once for less bulk too. I'd probably, lol, just push the sweater sleeves up because I'm RATE.

Thanks for all the cuff suggestions! I will def try scrunching next time. I never think about it because I can never keep my sleeves scrunched over bare arms, but I think with the shirt underneath it might not fall down immediately.

Umm Lila, no I didn't make the sweater. It's just a thin cashmere one from uniqlo. It's actually a bit too soft and slouchy on its own so the shirt underneath gives it some structure, which I like.

Anna, I want to come to Seattle again. We were actually just invited to a wedding in Seattle in June but we can't go because it's the same day as my BIL's wedding. Boo.

I just scrunch up my sleeves. I like the neckline of the cream pullover for this outfit. My favorite pullover for this type of layering has a similar neckline. I prefer it over a v neck for some reason, even though I like v necks in general.

Looks good! I like the light color combination. I usually cuff the shirt sleeves over the sweater which generally makes the sleeves around bracelet or 3/4 length. I like to show the cuffs of the shirt to show some of the shirt pattern.

My "trick" for the sleeve issue would be to slightly scrunch the sweater sleeve and turn the cuff of the shirt back over the sweater sleeve. Might be still too bulky for your taste, though.

i really like this on you...i also tend to fold back the sleeves so show more the to shirt underneath.

This is a great combo! Those Liberty print button fronts work SO well for you. I like the touch of the taupey colored boots. They blend nicely with the light sweater.
