WIW: Emphasising the Pear

Intermittent photos at the moment due to renovation disruption but I did manage to sneak these shots in.

You know that story that starts with it seemed like a good idea at the time - I think that might apply to this skirt.

I thought it looked fine in the shop, it seemed to look okay in the mirror but OMG not so sure once I look at the photos. No hiding the butt and saddlebags in this one.

Oh well regardless I wore it all day but changed to black shoes snd actually liked how this felt - hubby (aka the photographer) reckoned it looked better IRL - what say you?

yes it accentuates your curves but I think this is a VERY flattering outfit. the top and jacket hit just right to make the most of the waist to hip curve I am so envious of as an apple/rectangle (barrel?). enjoy and walk tall!

Now I get it at last. I was having subtle Sophia Loren vibes from you all this time, yet it took me this outfit for things to click. Yup, very figure hugging, which is not bad thing at all. Quite the opposite in my book. I call it retro glam (e.g. I picture Imelda May when I think of that descriptor). Before I forget, I think you have a very clear signal from hubby what to wear on a date next time
Btw, here's one trick I use when I wear this type of skirts, because I found that when the side hems may look un-tapered due to fabric, stretching or my own imperfect posture, thus tipping the look to potentially frumpy: I pull the waist at the back of the skirt slightly up a so it sits a little higher than the front side of the waist (not sure if this is clear?). That way the skirt looks more tapered and flattering.

I think you look great - the skirt is form fitting but not in an unflattering way and I love the blouse/jacket combination!

Yes, the skirts hugs your curves but you look fabulous!!!! You've debombshelled (is that the word) the skirt nicely with the ruffle top topped by the crisp black blazer. I love the shoes, and am sure black shoes would be lovely too. I'm glad you felt great, because you really look great.

I'm appreciating the positive comments. I have a similar body shape and I always feel self conscious in skirts with that shape!

Well, you still look fabulous, but I totally, completely understand what you mean! This is my struggle too. In general, I do not like emphasizing my pear-ish tendencies. I've tried on skirts that do exactly this. And it's always more pronounced in photos than IRL. I wonder if it's a combination of the print and the cut. I find that I have to seek just the right amount of taper and substantial fabric in a skirt like this -- just a tad too much taper and too much stretch emphasizes things I'd rather not.

At any rate, you're still gorgeous, and I can see why your husband approves!

Oh, by the way, Ornella, I had to add -- Imelda May is absolutely gorgeous even in person! She's teeny tiny and so adorable, and such a sweetheart. Even her casual style is rockabilly perfection. I got to interview her a couple of years ago, and it was a pleasure.

I think you look curvy and beautiful. But Lyn D is so right that the lack of movement in photographs makes a big difference. Trust DH's IRL comment.

I'm in complete agreement with everyone else. The outfit is fab and you look great in it. It's curve hugging and very flattering!

You have a beautiful figure and look wonderful in this outfit. The skirt length is just right. I like the way the top and jacket drape and how the light grey shoes work as a nude, your silver jewelry completing the look.

I think you look good! For self-concious days, I have a similar shape and I'd try this with something long and flowy on top. Tricky to find the right length but if you have something give it a try. The tapered skirt will still provide ample structure and curves.

I love this on you, I've found that what you cannot hide, you must embrace. I feel the same way about not making curves stand out, but I'm starting to wonder WHY I have this intense desire to cover the curves and hide them. It only takes MORE effort, larger clothes and often it comes out looking frumpy when I try to hide the assets. Wear that skirt with confidence because you really look fab!

I gave up on skirts a few years ago, because fitting them to my pear shape was just too difficult for me to figure out. Yes, this skirt shows off your figure, but it's not over the top, it just shows off enough to say I am woman hear me roar. I like this skirt and would like to see it remixed into a casual look, maybe with a flat shoe, t-shirt and denim jacket?

KC you look fabulous! I'm sure the swingy top looks better in motion, too. I'm thinking perhaps the fitted skirt also feels even more fitted since fluid/oversized is the norm nowadays. It's a great skirt though, totally worth playing around with. I think it'd be super fun styled with a boho supporting cast

Lisa - the easy fix is to always wear trousers and A Line skirts but I'd like to extend my repetoire and will keep playing with this skirt. Including your casual remix suggestion.

I love the pattern and the way you have styled this skirt! The two toned pumps look soft where I imagine the black the black gave the outfit a more 'stern/serious' feel?
The skirt appears to fit beautifullyand while it does emphasise your hips it also accentuates your waist! Lucky you to have one!
You felt good in this ensemble-win! And your husband likes this outfit- winwin!!! Wha-hoo!

That skirt looks amazing on you!

However, if you are having a day where you feel more self conscious I can recommend wearing a waterfall vest/waistcoat or cardi (as per my outfit pic). As a fellow pear I think it would suit you down to a tee.

I have the exact same proportions and am constantly buying skirts too big at the waist and taking them in (with varied levels of success). You look great in this outfit. Personally, in more casual stretchy pencil skirt outfits, I've been front-tucking tees or silky blouses and letting the sides/back drape for a high/low effect. That seems to minimize the pear shape a bit, but probably would not work with this more polished outfit. Andrea's photo was a great help to me and I might consider adding something like that to my wardrobe too. Great skirt, great outfit!
