WIW: dot blazer and q about sleeves

I’m at SOs for a few days and of course his mirrors are all in dark places so v. Hard to take pics. I snuck a pic of myself in work bathroom wearing a dotted blazer (brand = Boden)

I really like it but am concerned about sleeve length. Buttons on sleeves are functional.

Do you think they look Ok as-is? Can I roll them or scrunch?

Front buttons could also be moved about 3/4” but not sure this is necessary as blazer seems to lie flat and nicely. It does make my top half look wider than it is, but maybe that’s ok considering I’m slightly pear-shaped.

What do you think?

The fit looks right to me - I think while a size smaller would fit it might be too constricting. Sleeve length, you could scrunch or hem a little - the long sleeves probably would not bother me.

Do you wear jackets done up or undone?

I think it is a lovely jacket - really nice with jeans.

I like blazer sleeves to come to right around the thumb joint, so that looks perfect to me!

The quality looks amazing -- visible even here -- and the sleeve length looks perfect to me. I always wear my sleeves scrunched or rolled -- just my personal "thing" -- so I think you can do it (except in the most formal situations, perhaps).

@all: oh ok. I thought the sleeves on an indoor jacket had to be shorter: at the wrist.

But maybe it’s different for blazers, or maybe I’ve been googling the wrong thing, lol!

Such a beautiful blazer, and it looks amazing on you, Smittie! (I'm definitely going to look at Boden next time I need a blazer.) I've become a little addicted to bracelet or wrist-length sleeves on blazers, so I would love it if they were shorter, but I think these sleeves work at this full length just fine.

My Boden blazer sleeves are that length too. Luxurious.

Smittie, make sure you like the length of the blazer. It's quite a bit shorter than my Boden blazers. Length looks great on though. Killer CHIC blazer.

Looks great to me! The sleeves on my Boden tweed hit right at about the same place. I do scrunch them from time to time depending on what I'm wearing underneath; works better with some tops than with others.

I think Angie's right that the tweed is a bit shorter than some of the other Boden blazers; it strikes me as a classic look rather than trendy, and for me a shorter blazer is much easier to wear than a longer one.

Some while ago I was reading around in the Ask Andy forum for menswear. They're very preoccupied with all forms of correctness in clothing. One fellow asked about sleeve length of his wife's new blazer's sleeves and they all told him those rules don't apply to women because they have glamour and that kind of makes mincemeat of the rules

It looks like a slightly "shrunken fit" to me so the torso looks like the right fit. I think that theoretically ,as per tailoring "rules", the sleeves are the right length, but a little shorter might be even better and more consistent with the style.

Jacket sleeve length, when it's not comfortable for any reason is really distracting.

@Angie: thank you! I noticed you had commented on the length of the blazer before, and I wasn’t sure what to do with this info as it is only 1” shorter than yours. I also don’t have a great eye for what’s in and what’s out in blazer trends. All the different lengths look good to me. I did google blazer lengths but there seems to be. A wide range of acceptable lengths. I think I’ll enjoy this length for now, and if I buy more, I’ll look at length in a more considered way.

@vildy: ha, yes, I think it was Ask Andy that told me the sleeve length needs to be higher! I am so happy we can break the rules (or just don’t have as many rules). “Glamour makes mince meat of the rules” is a goodie! I wonder if the men have more rules because they have fewer types of clothes to wear.

@isabel: thank you! I wonder about what a shrunken fit IS. I guess the sleeves are shorter and the length is shorter, but you can’t really do much more than that to shrink the fit, can you? I think my upper body makes things look shrunken because there is no girth there. It almost appears concave because my rib cage is quite small compared to my lower body.

Smittie, odd. My blazers reach the line of my crotch point. So they look 3 inches longer. But no biggie. This looks fab.

Smittie, I was thinking "shrunken fit" as in the Thom Browne version, which is, of course, completely intentional. The fit of the jacket looks just right to me, including the sleeves, BUT, if they bother you, you could shorten them a little with no loss of style.

I like my outerwear to have long sleeves, and even sweaters, but anything jacket-y, no longer than the wrist.

Love it - lucky find! I'm with Viva in liking bracelet length sleeves on jackets. I'm always pushing mine up or folding the cuff back. Something about really long jacket sleeves makes the whole jacket look too big to my eye. Can't explain it
