WIW : Did I forget my pants?

Went out for dinner with my husband (a rare event! ) and my brother came to mind the children. He saw me ready to go and asked if I had forgotten my pants, and was this a long shirt or a short dress?!
Lucky I don't count on him for fashion advice. However, I added leggings to wear the outfit to work today.
Is it really too short? For the record, husband didn't mind!

You look great! The dress is a perfectly appropriate length, so I certainly do not understand what your brother was thinking. Love the red accents to the outfit.

The length is appropriate. Perhaps your brother's remark was just prompted by fact that the dress really is a "long shirt." I'd shrug it off as "people say stuff in the moment."

Thanks, Liz and ElCee. His comment has given me a giggle more than anything. Maybe he's paying more attention generally - he did note my leather-look leggings previously! Maybe he thinks I should wear them again?

That's funny. I can see how the shirt dress could throw him off, but the outfit looks great to me! Guy comments are the best (if you have sense of humor)! My personal favorite was when my husband asked if I was dressed to climb the alps with the Von Trapp family.

I really like this outfit, Helen. It really comes together with the necklace and shoe matching. You look casual but still put together and polished.

I expected to click on your picture and see something super short, but I think the length is perfect for wearing w/o pants or leggings.

Haha! I wore a dress with a shirt-tail hem to work and one of my co-workers asked me the same thing! When I pointed out it was longer than the dress our receptionist was wearing he said it wasn't the length but the fact that it had "shirt-tails". So I just wrote it off being a guy thing.
I think you look great and that your dress is very versatile--can be worn as a dress or as a tunic. Enjoy!

Brothers!!!! As was mentioned up thread, it is probably the curved hem that caused his confusion. According to my DD, a dress/skirt hem isn't too short unless it hits above fingertip length -- which means you can probably go shorter another three or four inches. <gr>

I love the length, and I am really schoolmarmish on short dresses. It doesn't even begin to look like a tunic to me.

No, I don't think it is short. Maybe he referred more to the fact that it resembled a shirt and to him you are just wearing a shirt. In reality it is a shirt dress but man and fashion...

I think some men don't get shirt dresses. They think a shirt should be worn as a shirt. Don't consult them on culottes that look like skirts either. You look fab Helen. And it's definitely not too short.

Looks great...definitely a reasonably modest length. Men don't always get fashion.....I always get comments on my harem pants or anything a bit different...that is something outside of jeans and t shirt and a conventional shift dress

Silly brother! From what I can tell, you could wear it just like this to work--no leggings required--and I'm pretty modest in my work dress. You look great!
