WiW: Day 5. Too trendy?

This is a completely new look for me. Confessions: I never wear skirts. Last time might have been 10 years ago - maybe longer. Lots of learning about proportions, drape, flow vs. straight (I'm not sure I'm using these word correctly, novice here.) I am also someone who wants to have some daring/unexpected aspects to my style but think "refined artistry" vs. perhaps just this latest asymmetrical trend. Does this just come off as trendy? But it was easy and sure to be comfy for a work at home lifestyle.

I love your boots. I have a pair a little like yours here and I'm trying to make them last longer than a month, I love them so much.

I love this outfit. My one thing is, I can't tell how long the skirt really is because of lens distortion. On my phone, the skirt looks leg-shortening avant garde length.

I love the skirt + leggings look, the asymmetrical sweater and the scarf - basically, you look fab! But have you tried this outfit with your moto boots I see in another post? I find the glimpse of skin here is shortening your legs a bit - and to me is seasonally off with all the warm layers, but it hasn't been above freezing here in quite some time

I was going to say what Jules said! I looked at your ankles and felt a shiver go through me. But that's my climate talking. I really like the skirt on you and definitely think this idea works.

I think you look terrific! Very current and interesting. I am not in the slightest bit bothered by the bare ankles, personally, and if anything, it makes your look seem more current. I wouldn't change a thing.

Not too trendy at all. You remind me of my uber-cool sister, who dresses a lot like this. And I like the little flash of skin at the ankle, but it's only around zero here. Moto boots would be great for leaving the house.

Jules/Suz: Nice comment about the moto boots, big thanks Jules! It was 45F here today but I will think about exposed ankles moving forward.

Thanks all around. This is my biggest fashion leap in...well, I can't remember how long. Lot's of experimentation in my near future so I hope you will be brutally honest!

Very cute outfit! But - what I want to know is, what's wrong with trendy????

I like the glimpse of your ankle - I think it adds a bit of structure to the outfit.

Too trendy? No way! You look happy, cozy and stylish. Although I'm with Suz - shivering at the sight of bare ankles on a day like ours (-25ish C today, yuck). I'd like the balance of a heavier , more closed in boot with such a big wooly scarf:)

Marley: You ask a simple question -- "What's wrong with trendy?" - and I don't have an immediate, simple answer. Not sure if this is me complicating the matter. Struggling here....hmm. Two things come to mind, I hang on to my clothes for years so I like them to have a timeless element. And because this is a new look, I was't sure it looked authentic or if I was playing dress up in some current trends.

A fabulous look. Cozy, comfy, fun and flattering.

What's wrong with looking trendy was my question - and see that Marley asked it too. There is no style without a certain amount of fashion. That amount varies per outfit. This might be a trendier look than your daily look, but there is absolutely everything right with trendy. Rock on.

I would also call it more artsy. But it is also trendy, and lovely on you.
Your answers on why not be trendy are interesting.
I would say that regarding keeping your items for long, there is basically one( the top ) that is more trendy, everything else you can incorporate in less trendy outfits for years to come. And even the top will be around for a couple of years, because even very trendy things at one point tend to linger after their peak for awhile.
About the part of looking like you are playing dress up, I think we all feel that when we are trying something new to us.

I probably should have given a bit more background on this - I am really just beginning to refine and experiment with my style. This outfit was really a test outfit compiled of inexpensive items -- the intention of buying finer clothes when I have a tighter concept of my style. I bought a black EF asymmetric poncho that I love and feels great but this highly draped look (all bought from Forever 21) is again very new. I had never shopped at H&M, Forever 21, Target -- so this has opened a new world for basics and experimentation. I was more of a OffSaks, LastCall, Nordstrom/Rack, Marshals, TJMaxx kinda gal.

My journey right now (having learned from the wisdom of Angie and this great resource) is about that delicate balance of "modern classic" where timeless and modern elements are blended. And I hope to include some artistry (arty) into the mix. And, I am truly in my first week of this journey.
