The heat finally broke, so I took the opportunity to wear my new olive culottes and some layers. I paired the culottes with my handknit lace yoke top and my white jacket on top. Because both the top and the culottes are fluid, they looked best with a more fitted, structured topper. (I tried this first with my blush linen moto and it just looked sloppy.) Since it was a little chilly in the morning but not cold enough for a coat, I added an oversized, lightweight scarf as "outerwear." Silver gladiators on the feet.

I really, really enjoyed wearing this, and not just because I've missed layering all summer (hooray for fall weather!). The culottes are super fun to wear! (And by the way, they did relax and stretch out a bit like I expected.)

Which iteration do you prefer? Scarf+jacket, jacket, or just the top?

Fun! I like the versions with the jacket more than without, which surprises me a bit especially since I love all the details in that lovely top. Glad the heat finally calmed down over there ^^

Hi Diana, I think I prefer the jacket+culottes the best. I think the scarf is too much, and I like looking at your fun top.
I love the puffed shoulder detail on the blazer too!
I think a colourful bag (red?) would kick this outfit into high gear!

The version with the jacket--wonderful fit-- but without the scarf appeals to me most. There's enough layering and structure to make it interesting without it becoming overwhelming.

Love those culottes on you, Diana! (I have to call mine "wide-leg crops," though. The word "culottes" brings to mind some truly heinous shorty patterned outfit my mother bought for me at age 8 or 9; truly bad.)

I love all iterations but #2 the best. I really like seeing the contrast between the jacket's structure and the pant's looseness.

Now, I need to iron and wear mine!

No scarf( meaning not needed for styling).
The jacket shape is perfect for the culottes. You are s master at proportions. Looks great! Also, what a great mid season look. This works in spring, too-- tweaking colors and accessories for fa or spring.
I. Some silvery necklace would look great with the glads.

Wow. This is such a great look and you look fantastic in it! My favorite is with the jacket, without the scarf so the details of the top can show. It just looks so soft. Love it!!

Wow. Diana you did an amazing job of putting together this outfit. I find the top to be romantic and pretty but the olive to be naturally more masculine in feel because it is reminiscent of army green. Fab mix. I prefer the two options without the scarf but mainly because it hides the details of the top a bit too much and the details add so much to the look.

I think all versions work well! Just switch it up depending on the temperature and your mood. I confess I wasn't the biggest fan of these culottes when you first posted them, but seeing them styled like this has changed my mind. Very nice!

This is wonderful, Diana. I think the soft color palette, paired with the flowy silhouette, is particularly pleasing. I'll have to think about that some more. Why do I think high contrast colors in the same silhouette might not work as well?

It's also wonderful to use softer colors for autumn -- no need to go dark and earthy right away! Why not enjoy bright, crisp early autumn?

Sounds like most people prefer jacket + no scarf. But i wonder if there would be more scarf love if the top had been plain/nothing special to get hidden under the scarf... regardless, I did like all 3 versions and actually did wear them all in the course of the day.

Smittie, I actually have THREE red handbags. Unfortunately none of them are big enough to hold my laptop so I couldn't use one on Friday. But you're right, a red purse would have been great with this.

Celia, the culottes hunt took a long time! The combo of features I wanted (mid or low rise, flat fronts/no pleats, and wide legs) is really hard to find!

Beth Ann, interesting thought about high and low contrast. I guess I find it hard to do high contrast at all with olive, as I kind of see it as a medium neutral... so both black and white are not super high contrast with it. Or did you mean something like pairing two colors that are high contrast with each other together with them? Like a b/w top with the olive culottes? Perhaps I will try that just to see!
