I picked up this light rayon butterfly top at Forever 21 as a transitional/early fall refresher because I'm a sucker for botanical realism and things with wings. I've worn it with boyfriend jeans and other casual outfits, but I couldn't resist wearing this to breakfast at least once at a French bakery.

I first included the pearl necklace, but decided it took the 50's look a bit too far so edited that before going out. (although if it had been an afternoon tea....)

All feedback welcome! Does the pattern mixing pass muster, or did I cause passerby's to have eyestrain. Any tweaks? (I did fix my hair before venturing out).

LOL on the eyestrain comment! You know, I think it totally works. You are brave - I'd never have thought of this! I like it with the grey topper - and nice idea to remove the pearls - although they work too. Creative, inspirational, and totally on trend IMHO

It is busy but not too much, maybe because of the simple classic shapes and the color palette on the top and skirt. I like the cardi theoretically but prefer the outfit without. You look fab!

To my eye it works perfectly. I like it best without the cardie and with the pearls. The shapes are so wonderfully classic.

This refined, elegant pattern mixing is beautiful on you! I agree with the others that, because of the classic pieces and styling, this definitely works. I actually kind of love it with the pearls and hope you have the opportunity to wear it that way sometime.

I wonder how it would look with a deeper color cardi-- perhaps in a coral or orange that is in the shirt.

Thanks all! Windchime, good point about trying different colors of cardis, I started with this one because it works well with the silver accents and I wanted a slightly muted version of this outfit for the first venturing. I have various dark options, and something peach or green, but a bright red or orange might be good.

For those who aren't into the waterfall, other ideas for toppers if needed? (I actually like it without most too). I have classic cardis and a denim jacket that might work...

I'll definitely bust out the necklace for the right occasion.

Just wanted to add my voice to the plethora of WOW votes for this. That skirt is to die for.

Swoon! I did a complete double take. I am such an inpatient reader I missed that it was a top & bottom. The pattern mix is spot on. I actually prefer the middle picture with pearls. Something about going all the way and owning it. The cardigan, to my eye, actually makes the outfit seem more busy. It hides the details and your little waist.

I love it too...it really does work. I also like it best without the cardigan but obviously there are times we do need another layer.
It is fun with the pearls too.
Because it is so vibrant and the patterns are bold it takes it from retro to modern. I would love to wear this.
