WIW: Casual cobalt

I like cobalt but don't have much as it seems to be one of those grown-up colors with more polished than RATE items. Anyway, I'd picked up this flannel shirt at the Rack and wore it today with my old grey COH skinnies and these oil slick sneakers for a casual day out and about.

I love the shirt but the buttons won't stay done even though it's not tight - they are a wardrobe malfunction waiting to happen! I need a substitute because it's a great weekend item, and I can see it with leather skinnies or my leather skirt too.

I love this on you and it definitely is so great with your style that the cobalt is a plaid rather than solid. The whole outfit is wonderful!

It looks great on you Una, maybe replace the buttons with larger ones or stitch a little of the button holes closed?

The cobalt looks great on you! With shirts that gape or won't stay buttoned, I just sew the front shut and put it on over my head. I never wear them open anyway.

I hadn't thought about many cobalt items being more polished than RATE, but I believe you have a point. Maybe that's why it's underrepresented in my wardrobe even though I adore it.

Cobalt is my favorite color. I love it worn this way. Looks cool and effortless, but the bold color makes the shirt interesting. I think you're right about it being more common in polished items!

Interesting that you find cobalt to be hard to find on RATE items - I'd thought about it. Top looks great on you, although those buttons wouldn't last a minute on me.

LOL about Diana's suggestion to sew the shirt closed and slide it over your head. With my shoulders, I'd likely rip the shirt if I tried to do that.

Great color on you. I feel like the cobalt elevates the shirt from the standard red version.

Cobalt looks great on you. When I've had that problem with buttons I've done what Diana said - run a stitch about half way up the placket and put the shirt on over my head. It works!

I don't think I can get this over my head - as an IT I often have to step into dresses instead of putting them on the regular way. I am looking at some Rails shirts which look perfect but are quite expensive. Anyone have other ideas? I came very close to a wardrobe accident and I don't think it's the buttons because they all do it - it's a design flaw. Oh well...

Haha, I have had skirts that I had to take off over my head because I couldn't get the waistband over my hips! So clearly we have different problems! ;). Maybe you could get snaps put in?

Too bad about the buttons, I like the color and the plaid on you. If I really love the item I fashion tape it up, but that seems a bother.

Hmm, a beautiful shirt with bad buttons... I'd maybe try sewing it shut, or finding slightly larger-diameter buttons to replace the originals.

Or (what I'd probably do), just wear it open shirt-jac style over a graphic tee.

It's such a great shirt -- I bought DH a very similar cobalt buffalo shirt for the holidays and it's one of his favorites now. So nice to see him in a bold color for once -- hard to find for guys.

Great choice to get the buffalo check in less expected color. It looks great like that and can see more options to combine with leather, buckles, Metallica to look even less traditional.

I agree with the suggestions to try a fix on the buttons/holes before giving up on it. I have a number of shirts that do the same thing! I think sometimes the buttonholes are just a smidge too big for the buttons, or the buttons too small for the holes. I've also just used a bit of fashion tape to keep the shirt closed when it seems like a small gaping issue contributes to the problem -- it seems so many shirts are cut with buttons that hit right above and below the fullest part of my chest, which seems to contribute to the issue. And there are some shirts I just always wear with a tank underneath. I've also done the thing where I simply stitch the shirt up and put it on over my head, if it's roomy enough.
