WIW: boyfriends and oxfords - YouLookFab Forum

Two days of boyfriend fits and my new gray shimmer oxfords here. These outfits grew out of a need for comfort, and I'm not entirely happy with how they look. I don't think boyfriend fits are as flattering on me as slimmer fits (skinny or straight leg jeans) or flares. I guess, or hope, they're JFE--just flattering enough. What do you think?

The outfits:
1-4 (worn to work): boyfriend chinos in cadet blue (Eddie Bauer); blurry print knit crossed-top tee in blue, gray, and ivory (made by me); stone and cream leather belt (Annette Goertz); gray leather jacket with quilted stitching (Halogen); gray shimmer oxfords (Naot, Kedma); olive coat (Laundry by Shelli Segal); navy and tan leather satchel (Dooney & Bourke). I took off the leather jacket at work, where it was unusually warm.

5-7 (worn for a day off): new boyfriend jeans in a dark, un-distressed wash (Kut from the Kloth, Catherine); mixed art nouveau print tee in greens, pink, taupe, and ivory (made by me); forest green cashmere shrug with open-weave sleeves and ruffle trim (made by me); belt, shoes, and coat, as above; taupe shoulder bag (Aunts & Uncles).

ikwym with the slouchy. you do an excellent job keeping balance with the slimmer tops. have you thought about a small cuff so the pant leg hangs straighter--less bunching?

I like your new KUT BF jeans on you a lot, but I have to admit I've gotten so used to seeing some skin or at least roll "detail" that I have a hard time now seeing them *not* rolled. I've been wondering myself how I'm going to feel about this come cold weather (it's still very warm here). I may try a darker belt with this outfit. And I really like your art nouveau print tee!

I'm not in love with BF chinos- not just on you, but in general, something about them often feels a bit off. I own at least 3 pair of chino style pants right now and I rarely wear them. And 2 are slimmer fit but still just don't feel as good to me as my jeans. I have a deep brown pair of "jeans" (very light weight but still seem cut like jeans) and those just feel so much better. I can't explain it. I'll be checking back to see if anyone has any more specific advice for styling them. It might just be my personal preference for jeans or ponte or other fabrics as opposed to chino. I do wear chino shorts but I noticed I kept reaching for my DIY cutoffs this summer.

I like the jeans--I think they overlap with fluid straight (types are all over the map, as Angie points out).
Something's not so right about the chinos. I would try a small roll, I did that with some EB straight chinos and liked it better. Or if wearing scrunched, try a lower vamped shoe. Also maybe try loose knit top with semi-tuck--somehow need to get the outfit to look more nonchalant.

I agree, that there is something "off" about the chinos. From the front, they just look too big on you, but I see that from the back, the fit is fine. I think the contrast belt is maybe a bit too light too - drawing attention to the fact that the pants are quite loose on your hip/waist., or making it look that way. Does that make any sense? And, yes to a bit of a cuff/roll- something to pull down the leg of the pant and get rid of the bagginess a but.

You look great as always. But I agree that the belt is distracting, I think lower contrast would work better.

Thanks, everyone! I seem to lack a belt in the right color for the chino outfit. Next time I'll see if I can roll them (without baring my ankle--it's getting too cool for that now).

Unfrumped, the semi-tuck is a good idea, too. I couldn't figure out a top to wear that I could semi-tuck--which is strange, because it seems like all I did was semi-tuck all summer long. Guess my fall tops are closer fitting.

I think the very boyish chino with the oxfords works in #1, Sharan. I'd add a top with a higher neckline to balance out the outfit up top. #5 is super cute. xo

Ah--just went back to the blog post. I am thinking of my t-shirts, most of which are not the newer boxy or fluid styles. A lot of them fit closer to the body--the exceptions being some that I've made more recently.
