WIW: Bootcuts for Janet, and bonus kitchen remodel photos

So in honor of Janet I thought I'd try wearing my old Joe's bootcuts, which are soft and comfy. Not sure if this worked. It made me realize that I have a hard time figuring out what kind of top to wear with this style. I don't think waist surrender works, but I don't do form-fitted, feel too muffin-toppy to tuck, and I can't do cropped without exposing myself when I move. Any advice?

Bonus pics of kitchen in disarray - bottom cabinets are new hickory shaker, old ones still up top, new strand woven bamboo flooring and new fridge! We have a dishwasher but no real sink. It's like we are camping.... Ugh.

Sympathies on the reno. We lived without a kitchen for 3 months and washed dishes in the bathtub. NOT an experience I want to repeat any time soon.

So..I seem to remember you have some silk shirts. Can you tuck those and let them drape nicely?

You do not look in the least muffin-toppy. Very svelte in fact.

I am living in fear of washing dishes in the bathtub! The bathroom sink is bad enough. Fortunately the dishwasher is working. We were using paper plates last week!

I think this looks terrific. I don't see a muffin top, but I think I know what you mean; I'm very sensitive about my muffin top even if other people are dismissive about the fact I have one.

Like Suz said, what about some of your equipment shirts? I wore my Joes with *your* Equipment shirt and a chunky gray sweater a few days ago. I might have looked like a big dork, but I felt fab

I agree that you look great and the word svelte is accurate....

As for the remodel been there a few years ago and turned my dining room into a mock kitchen for a family of six. We did everything from the floor up and closed in a door as well. We used paper products and the kids felt like we were camping. Worth all the trouble as we moved into a house with original 1978 kitchen...

TL, we found brown and cream 70s lino on the wall, under the oak laminate that had been used as a BACKSPLASH. *shudder*

I agree that tucking an Equipment sillk shirt should be tried. Usually there's enough blousing at the belt that any tummy is somewhere in there. . .

Your kitchen looks on its way to gorgeous! Hope it can get completed in time for entertaining, not to mention maintaining sanity.

This is how I've been wearing my bootcuts, too. Slouchy sweater, half tuck, done. I think they also work with silk blouses, but I like how it's easy to wear a fitted jacket over the sweaters.

Dishes in the bathtub?! Scares me, too. The kitchen looks amazing, though! Try to keep imagining how awesome it will be when finished?

Rae, have you posted pics? I've been pretty on and off here - would love to see some ideas to make these feel new again. They are very comfy, I'll say that!

I've been kind of off and on, too. I these are my only photos. However I did just wear bootcuts again today. Emerald sweater, black bootcut hudsons, and my rust trench.

Oh, nice! I like that your sweater is a bit longer - mine is short and I kept thinking I was going to show skin (or flab) at DS's basketball party.

I think this works well, and so will the other suggestions you've gotten. Good luck enduring the kitchen remodel - sounds like you can at least use bits and pieces of it - be sure to post "after" pics.

I love that sweater-jean combo, and I think you look great in it! I wore boot cuts again yesterday ( long day, didn't get a picture), with a muted grey/metallic Trouve blouse tucked and a black studded belt. Felt pretty good in it, but the jeans (my long pair) were just a smidge long with the boots I wore, so I occasionally felt like my hems were dragging on the floor. But my hemmed boot cuts felt too short! Such are the challenges of bootcuts.

Good luck on the reno! We will be renovating our kitchen sometime in the next two years ( need to do our master bathroom first, in the next six months), and I am dreading it. It will entail a redo of much of the main floor of our house since its an open floor plan and we're changing the stupid white tile floors. Hubs is insisting we'll need to move out while the work is being done. Ugh.

Una, you look great. I was thinking that for me it's not so much a flattering vs. non-flattering issue with bootcuts. I just somehow associate skinnies with the here and now, and bootcuts with another era....not that they're dated, really, but there's a seventies vibe in my mind. I guess because that's all we had in high school! But they really do look good on you.

Mochi, how could you forget painters pants and overalls?!!

The colored skinnies remind me so much of the early '80s, remember all those bright colored, skin tight straight leg Gloria Vanderbilt's and Sergio Valente's? Even the really lean girls had to lay down to zip them up.

Of course you're right, Claudia. Jordache, GV, Calvins...they were skinnies but not cool and rocker-y--they were snob, elitist jeans in my high school! We also had besides the overalls and carpenters the khaki army pants and I know there are more I'm omitting. And pants with much more of a flare than a bootcut as well.

I have been off and on too and feel like I have missed a lifetime of happenings.

I think the boot cuts look great on you and so does the top. The kitchen reno looks like it is coming along nicely. I really like all of the finishes so far. Can't wait to see the final product but likely far less than you.

Janet, I had to BEG my mother to take me to the Army Navy store to get a pair of painter pants, in a drop cloth colored fabric, LOL. But I remember that pinstripe denim. My mom thought those painter/carpenter pants were an atrocity of fashion, but I wanted a pair so badly she finally caved.

You legs look so long in these bootcuts Una! I like the partial tuck with them - that's usually what I do. I think also untucked works if the top isn't too long - definitely no tunic length with them. I also echo Suz's suggestion of your silk tops to try.

Kitchen reno looks like it's coming along. We re-did ours 4 years ago and I still remember what a mess our whole main floor was during the reno. It's all worth it though - just keep your eye on the prize!

Cooking vs. dishes clean-up is the hardest in a reno; plan meals w/easiest clean-up in mind. Bussing bins are your friend since they are much larger than dishpans. We got two of them; one held the dish drainer. We have a utility sink in our basement so never had to resort to the bathroom/bathtub, but if I were in your position, I would fill the bus bin in the bathtub, then balance it over the bathroom sink to do the dishes.

We emptied bookcases of books, then used them to store kitchen stuff we would be using during the reno. Also kept utensils and flatware stacked in the old drawers; it kept the stuff easy to locate. Since we're Asian, we use a rice cooker, so that appliance simplified cooking. Also used electric frying pan and MW since the hot plate we borrowed was unbelievably wimpy. You should be able to pick up all manner of small appliances at thrift stores and garage sales, not that you want to live on chocolate fountains and fondue. I remember hearing about crockpot disposeable liners; crockpots are a pain to clean so if I wanted to use one it would be a low aggravation solution.

Your kitchen seems to be coming along fairly quickly!

I love bootcuts! Skinnies are great too, but for me bootcuts are like the sweatpants of jeans. So much more comfy than skinnines. I always pair them with a sweater too, simple, but nice. That sweater is awesome, love the colorblock sleeves, and the yellow is fab!

Looks like the kitchen is starting to come together nicely. I hope it's back to normal for you soon. I would go crazy too if I lost my kitchen!

That sweater is brilliant! And I think there's really no risk of muffintop with the way you've half-tucked, but a soft blouse, as others have suggested may feel more comforting. This *looks* perfect though.

As for your kitchen, I'm torn between offering sympathies (did the bathroom sink gig with moving into our home for the first time with NO kitchen, as we didn't care for the builder's version of it and it took months to sort it out) and saying, 'That's disarray?! I'd best go hide under the sink of my current no-remodel rental kitchen if so!' Seriously, you look quite on top of things there. I don't do that well even in the everyday.

And I love your flooring. I want to walk barefoot on that...

The new cabinets are lovely! I still sport my bootcuts. I like to wear them with an exaggerated look. If a cropped sweater won't work what about one with a band at the bottom so the sweater doesn't drape down too low? Or a tucked in turtleneck with a long cardigan?
