WIW: Blogger week Friday

I thought I'd try out the black-gray-cognac combination from J's Everyday Fashion for my Friday Blogger day today. I'm not sure it really worked, but it's not awful either. (Or at least I don't feel like is!)

My photog today is down a hill from me, so the distortion from height difference is worse than usual... Oh well

Suggestions for improvement more than welcome!

I didn't wear one combination that I had intended to - I think I'll do another blogger day tomorrow. Actually, I really like this copycat thing - it gives me way more ideas than I would come up with on my own. I'll probably keep doing it for a long time.

You've got a more tomboyish vibe going on, that's for sure.

The shirt is reading more blue than grey on my monitor, which I don't think works quite so well as a softer grey would. I like the pairing of the vest with the boots, which bookend each other nicely.

I think the big thing for me though, is the vest and the shirt don't seem to work together too well, shape-wise. The whole outfit with a turtleneck would be good. Or that shirt with a softer vest or better yet, a jacket.

That said, you're right, it's not awful. But it doesn't make you look as pretty as it could.

You're right, it does look blue on the computer. IRL, it's definitely gray. At least, I think so....

But you're right, the vest and the shirt aren't working together properly. I hadn't noticed that - thanks for pointing that out!

I feel good that in just a month or so on this forum I can now tell when an outfit isn't super duper, even if it's not awful. I'm definitely learning, bit by bit And it'll take a while yet before I learn to trust my 'eye', I'm guessing.

That's one of the big things I've acquired here (or more accurately, am acquiring): a more discerning eye. Listening to the analyses stretches my frame of reference so I know better what questions to ask.

First of all, I have to say that I appreciate you on this forum. From the time that you joined you have not been shy to post and have been such an all around good sport. It has been amazing to me how quickly you have picked up different lessons.
I liked the first photo and thought the vest would work but it does look too big in the back. The pants are perfect pant length (PPL), that is no small achievement IMHO. The sweater and pants are a perfectly chic outfit for MOTG. You could add some accessories if you wanted. You have the makings of a very versatile foundational outfit. Who doesn't need those?!

Thank you Tina! I'm not sure what's going on in the 'back' photo - maybe the vest is too big, but I think I might be standing weird too - I'm not sure.

Thanks for noticing the Pant Length - I can't believe how big a difference it makes, and it was fairly easy to lengthen most of my pants to PPL (and the ones that couldn't be lengthened were easy to purge). I'm starting to notice fit in other ways too, and excited to learn what clothes fit me, and how to make some that don't quite fit - fit better.

I'm not shy about posting photos because I know I need help! I'm just so grateful that you all don't mind my questions and requests for help.

In addition to the comments about a good foundation, I would like to say that your inspiration colour combo is a lovely and sophisticated one, not a pairing everyone automatically thinks of, and that shows very good taste.

I am also seeing more blue than grey but it can be hard to catch colours on camera. I like the idea of this outfit. The vest is kind of cool. I think a more literal interpretation would work well in terms of the top. A silky blouse or drapey top would look pretty cool under that vest IMHO. Love the booties.

I like the color combination which I think really looks good on you and is definitely a sophisticated look. I'm a bit ambivalent about the vest; the color is good but the shape is rather rectangular from the front yet flared out in the back. I think the outfit sans vest would be a simple, but sleek MOTG look.

I'd love to see you in skinny pants for this look! You've got the legs for it, I'll wager. Tuck into the boots. I would prefer the tee to be longer. I like the vest, and the color combo is wonderful!

I love to copy looks as well. Definitely takes a lot of the mystery and uncertainty out putting something together!

I was actually planning to 'skinny' these pants - but my first attempt failed and made the legs all rumply and bumpy looking. I'll give it a second go, since I already have wide-leg black slacks, I had picked these up with the intent of making them skinny black pants.
