WIW: Blatant copy of JCrew - YouLookFab Forum

A new J Crew catalog arrived in my mailbox last night. I felt inspired and tore out several looks to copy.

The proportions on this first one are different than I'm used to. It is a bit of a challenge to pull off with my short neck and chesty front, but I thought it came together. Still not 100% sure about it though.

The picture had a blingy sweater, so instead I used a heavier necklace. I wish the light had been better because I think the low lighting really kills the effect. The necklace is a rich mixed amber piece. In person, the light on it is beautiful. Also, it matches the leopard wedges. I wish it were about 3 inches longer, though, so that I could wear it under the collar and over the sweater.

My take is a little less bold than the J Crew version, but I think works well for the office.

My only real concern is the proportions on the top. Does it work for me? Or should I shy away in the future?

Great interpretation! I think you could go a bit roomier with the fit of the sweater. Love your animal print wedges with this outfit and how you've added in that fab amber necklace.

@Inga, interesting! I'd gone with a snug sweater (not so snug w/o the shirt underneath!) thinking it would help rein in the volume. Hmmmmm. I'll see what I have that is roomier and see how it looks too... Thanks!

@Anna, easily done! I think it corrected itself the first time I raised my arms up.

That makes a lot of sense to me--the proportions of the shirt tail need to be in line with the cuffs and the collar. Brilliant!

This looks really good! I agree with Anna to show a smidge more shirt. I don't know how you people layer a thin sweater over a buttondown without looking all lumpy - it never works for me!

@Zapotte, thanks! The pumps are from JCrew this summer and they were a fabulous purchase. I loved that they combined an animal print and patent so that I could wear them with pants and not wear all the hair off of a calf hair pair. Wow that sounds like a Dr. Seuss rhyme! Glad you love them too.

Looks fab! Like Una, I can never get the buttondown with sweater look right on me. So you will have to wear it for me! Those wedges are positively gorgeous.

@Una and Shannon, you have me laughing. I feel like I look plenty lumpy and bumpy. Glad it doesn't show too obviously.

Maybe the secret is dedication and reconciliation? I've dedicated a few shirts to this look--they are too tight to wear without a topper, but that tightness makes them a smoother under layer. And I'm reconciled to the fact that I have lumps.

I see neither lump nor bump. For me it's also psychological though - I feel bunchy which makes me fidget, like I do in a turtleneck. Another reason I preter less fitted clothes!

Cute outfit, K! I love the leopard pumps & the amber necklace. To make the necklace longer, you can get a necklace extender--they make them in different lengths & goldtone, silvertone, sterling, etc. Or, you can use a bracelet as an extender--just wear the bracelet in the back. Of course a bracelet makes the necklace longer than an extender would, but if the bracelet is links/very flexible & the construction of the necklace & bracelet allow, you can fasten the bracelet in a loop rather than full-length. 2" seems rather short to me, so I think you can find them a bit longer. When I searched online, it came up that Walmart, Walgreens, Claire's, etc. carry necklace extenders, so they should be pretty easy to find.

P.S. Thanks so much for your excellent suggestions on wearing my new jeweled collar! Looking at your WIW gave me some great ideas!

I sooo love the JCrew new look, and You did it sooo well!:-) Have to think about adopting for myself too, one querry, is the sweatter an elbow length on your or folded up long sleeves? (I have an elbow length black sweatter and never wore it for a reason)

@Lyn67, it is an elbow length sleeve, so I'm just exploiting that for the scrunched sleeves. I have mommy arms, so not doubling up the sweater bulk with scrunching is a definite plus! So happy and excited to have inspired you!!!

I really like this look and I think the colors are so pretty on you. Agree that a big more shirt showing would be nice, but really the way you've styled it here is fine on its own. Gorgeous wedges- they make me want to finally try out a pair of leopard shoes.

I love the combo of the shoes and necklace with this. I think I'd prefer the shirt to be a little longer and also a more washed out shade of blue. But otherwise this is a fun look!

I like the look and was just going to echo what someone else said about lengthening the necklace. I use bracelets all the time to make my necklaces longer. I also occasionally use a safety pin to make them shorter, although this only works with necklaces with fairly large links that the pin will fit through.
