WIW: Black/Color, What? - YouLookFab Forum

Rae started an interesting thread regarding mixing black with brights and the comments ranged from those who never do it, and those who love it and do it a lot! Much of it had to do with coloring (hair, eyes, etc.), style-type, and personal energy.
I was one of those who said that it didn't work for me - which then prompted me to go to my closet and put on something that would be my version of a solid color with black.

ETA: - yes, I know this is not a bright color like Rae was talking about in her thread. But, its one of the brightest in my wardrobe - except for a neon pink, and I just wasn't going to go there!

In looking at these pics, it strikes me that I am really a slob. Yes, I am RATE - but you think that I could have evenly tucked my shirt into the front of my jeans? - or rolled my cuffs the same amount of times? Good grief - kind of embarrassing!

Belt - no idea
Boots - oldies but goodies - probably 8 years old - can't read the brand on the bottom - got them at Nordstroms - love them and they are holding up really well! They're a dark taupe color.

The color of your top looks great on you! And your boots still look great, even after 8 years.

Not sloppy! Carefree. I like it. You don't look studied, just lovely and fresh and spirited.

BTW, to my eye, that jade color has a lot of black in it, so I don't think it is too stark a contrast at all. It seems really well matched.

I love this Marley. I'ts a great colour to wear with black and even tho it's a colour, it's not shockingly bright and therefore not strikingly high contrast.

I agree with Deborah. I don't think the teal and black has that sharp contrast that some of us scramble away from. You look great! And every time I see that handbag, it reminds me how much I want the tote version.

I agree that jade green is a softer color than I was thinking of in my post... I think I may have worn a similar outfit During shoptoberfest. What is key to me is also the silvery buttons and shots of brown in the outfit which soften the color even more. I could not see myself wearing a version of this with a hot pink, red, or neon top, though.

To my eye, this works beautifully. It's partly because the jade is so lovely on you, partly because the white shiny stripes of the bag lighten it up, and partly because the drape of the silk somehow suggests ease.

Oh - yes, I know this is not a bright color. But it was the brightest item in my closet! (except for a neon pink shirt, which I knew was not going to work.) And yes, Rae - you're right about the brown softening up the outfit - I actually did that on purpose!

I like this mix of dark and light, it gives the same effect as white and black to my eye. Except I'd love to see this outfit with the python booties in your other post instead of the brown one's here. The brown seems to earthy a color against these cool based colors (or maybe it's my monitor).

Seeeeee? You look fantabulous. I do shy away from primary colors with black (true yellow, blue, red) only because they have so many assocations like bees and Halloween and whatever else. But citron and black? Emerald and black? Not what I'd always wear, but not that much of a problem. Often I do this when the bright is a pattern, which helps mix up some black into the color as Anna pointed out.

Oh, an Equipment silk blouse, and you got it on Ebay? Now that's the way to do it. It's a gorgeous saturated color, even if it's not that bright. Adding the taupe boots goes a long way to soften the intensities, you "clever girl" as Angie would say. I love your RATEness. Don't ever change. I couldn't look RATE if I tried (and I have really tried, BTW, because I think it looks so cool). You are on FIRE, woman!
