WIW: black shorts outfits - YouLookFab Forum

These shorts are the same style that I have in two other colors; I've shown the stone-colored ones recently. To me, black is a hard color to wear in shorts, because if it's warm enough for shorts I want to be wearing lighter colors. Yet I really like the shorts, so I persevered in styling them this week.

The outfits:
1-2 (worn for a day off and piano lesson): black shorts (Lulu-B); off-white tank (Semantiks); black and gray print mesh knit cardigan (made by me); black sling-back Mary Janes (Think!); black satchel (Elliott Lucca, Olvera).

3-5 (worn for a day off, breakfast out): same black shorts and bag; taupe slub-knit cotton tee (Caslon); taupe cowl-neck sweater (AllSaints, Elgar); taupe low-heeled lace-up sandals (P. Monjo).

Great shorts outfits! I really like the combination with taupe, I have a somewhat similar pair that I may try that with.

To make black shorts work for summer, I either add lots of white with maybe touch of blues and silver. The other thing I do is go edgy way and add more black/grey with studs etc. to make it look quite intentional.

Huh! Fun to see the AllSaints sweater worn a new way. Very clever item and lovely colour for you. I like the shorts on you. I hear you on the difficulty of black. I guess in addition to feeling dark and heavy for summer, it can also feel a bit more formal, so that can offer styling directions -- slightly "dressier" shorts outfits, as you've done here. Tanya offers another route -- making it edgier. I'll bet rabbit would have some good ideas.

Great shorts! I especially love 3/4/5. You find the most interesting pieces, Firecracker - those lace up sandals are incredible. What about purple with your shorts, you wear that color some, don't you?

Your shorts outfits are wonderful. I often make a column of black and add a sheer topper something like yours. I like deep purple, navy, or greens from citron to olive to hunter with black shorts, usually showing lots of skin...arms in my case.
My only suggestion would be to tuck in the ties at the bottom of the shorts for a simplified look.

Thanks, Tanya. I like your ideas! In fact, I was thinking of wearing a silver tank that I just got, plus something blue, but then I got stuck on how the tank would layer. So I put on the taupe pieces. You and Suz suggest going edgy, and that's a good thought, too.

Pil, love your idea of purple. I wish I had more purple in my wardrobe, actually. But I could put together something for sure. The sandals came from a local boutique. I love that they have a heel but feel as stable as flats--something about the way they're made. Piano lessons--I'm taking them, not giving them. I returned to piano lessons a few years ago after learning to play as a kid. It's a lot of fun to be learning it again. I found a very patient teacher!

I love the shorts...I've been looking all summer for something with about a 5 inch inseam, but you make me want these longer ones. Not that I've found either! But I think they look chic and comfy and casual and dressy, all at the same time.

I am loving black in summer this year. When I was visiting New York last month, "summer black" was clearly a thing, especially in dresses.

Juicy colors are fun in summer of course, but black can take you where no other color can. Nothings as chic, sophisticated or hip, imo and YOU are all of these things!

Great outfits! Love the shorts. When I was a kid, what we called "knickers" (shorts that tie at the knee, like yours) were in style for a year or two. I never got a pair. Now I so want one!

I absolutely love the drapey cardi in #1. So of course I scanned your list of items to find out where I could buy one. And I was again foiled! "Made by me." You are completely amazing!

I have been really into black this year for some reason, summer or not. As karymk pointed out, there's just something about black that is sophisticated, regardless of the temp!
