WIW: black midi shift dress (modern classic?)

Hi gang! Hope everyone is well and enjoying the style journey.
Today I wore a black, thin, woven midi shift dress. It feels almost like a thin lyocel or tencel. I was going for modern classic rather than anything too tricky for Monday morning.
I’m also trying a boho- look side pony which mainelady suggested a while back.
I don’t usually wear black but for some reason I like this one. It is shapeless but often that’s the type of dress I feel comfortable in so I hope it doesn’t look TOO sacklike. I added some bright coral nail polish to try and jazz it up a little.

Adorable; I love this. The pony looks great. I love the details at the hem and sleeves of the dress. Absolutely modern-classic with a side of boho.

Torontogirl: thanks very much. I’m glad you like the pony :). Summer dresses present an interesting dilemma because it can be tricky to add even a second, let alone a “third piece”, which is often ideal for a finished look...

I agree with Trontogirl. I like the dress on you a lot. The detail along the hem and sleeves is an especially nice touch. I also like the shoes/earrings. Perfect.

Thanks so very much for your kind feedback. I’m glad that by using a few details here and there the dress avoided looking too unfinished/sacklike/dull. It’s really all about shoes and accessories isn’t it? I do love a good shift dress, though they can be a bit hard to find. And the midi length trend is fun to play with. Also I’ve learned thanks to this thread that it’s called “openwork”. I was going to call it ric rac but I knew that wasn’t right...

The shoes and the hem detail make this so cute. While it isn't necessary, have you ever tried a belt? Maybe a bright color or a chain belt?

Karen13: a belt! Clever. Literally never thought of it but I have the perfect belt which I will try out. It’s tan suede, thin. Also I was thinking a wide brim hat of some sort could be good too- however not an option at this time as I don’t have any really.

I think "sack like" is exactly what a summer dress ought to be, if by "sack like" one means loose and easy. It is actually extremely flattering.

YLF! I really like your hair in the side pony and the details on your dress and your espadrilles keep you from having anything that resembles sacklike. The way you have styled your black looks fresh. I love the idea of a hat!

This is a lovely dress, definitely modern classic. I love the ankle strap espadrilles, and your earrings! This is nicely pulled-together but still relaxed and summery.

A wide brim hat -- either straw or canvas -- would really suit you! And I think in your climate you can justify some summer hats.

I really love this. I am drawn to shift dresses and this one fits so well that it doesn't look badly sacklike, just like it has an easy fit. The texture of the material is great and those shoes are perfect to add some interest. Wonderful outfit.

Yes- I do really like shift dresses. Always have... fit and flare does my head in.
I agree I could probably justify some sun hats- in fact as a matter of health I should prioritize that. I do borrow my husband’s golf hat if I go for a long walk in the sun, it’s just a navy blue canvas wide brim hat that kinda goes with everything.

I love this dress on you! The openwork detail helps keep the black from looking heavy. All you ladies who can wear shift easily are lucky! It seems like all the coolest, cutest casual dresses are shifts, and it bums me out, because they look horrible on my body type.

Janet: thank you kindly. You did look fab in that anthro black and white dress you posted the other day! Not a shift, but still, beautiful. I think we all wish we had the opposite of what we have sometimes.... like I’m quite envious of Angie’s pixie cut, pixies are my favorite haircut, however I’ve tried it twice and it looked awful on me lol.

I really like this and would wear all the pieces. I love shift dresses, as long as they aren’t too big. I wish there were more shift dresses that had a sleeve and reached the knee. Bonus points for saturated, non black dresses.
