This is a somewhat sombre post - Angie, please feel free to move it to Off Topic if you see fit.

Last week, here in SA a young girl named Anene Booysen was brutally raped and murdered. Yesterday, Oscar Pistorious, an international sporting hero shot and killed his girlfriend in what appears to have been a case of domestic violence.

A call was made to wear black today as a symbol taking a stand against violence and abuse of women.

As I got dressed this morning, I debated whether a wardrobe choice could really make a difference to the shocking statistics of violence against women in this country. To the perpetrators... I'm pretty sure a bunch of SA citizens wearing black means nothing. But if we keep fighting, keep remembering the victims and survivors, keep talking about the issues, perhaps our collective consciousness will make a change. I'm wearing black (albeit with an oversized denim shirt which I removed as soon as the morning chill was gone). The outfit is not great, but since I don't feel great and this is not a happy day, that somehow seems fitting.
