WIW: Birthday Symphony

Not my birthday, but my kiddo turned 16 (!!) today, and we're headed to the Colorado Symphony tonight for "Pokemon Symphonic Evolutions."

Formal dress isn't the norm for the symphony here, and the dress code takes a step further down for the pop culture concerts, so I'm wearing cropped trousers, a silk tank, and a blazer, with oxford shoes.

I don't wear a blazer often, but I love having one in my wardrobe, and this (ponte) one is starting to pill a bit. Anyone have suggestions for a beautiful, well-made, slightly stretchy (but preferably not knit) blazer in borderline-plus sizes? I'm willing to pay a little more for something with longevity.

Inge - Thank you! The concert should be much fun! And, yes, on the black, but I'd consider a rich, ink blue. I wear a 16-18 US on top.

I have a lovely ponte blazer from Boden. They have a few different styles. It's lined, which is different from most of the ponte blazers I find everywhere else.

eta: the find. I believe this is the jacket I have, although I bought a blush color as it was being discontinued. I find the size generous.

Here's a knit blazer from Talbots. Goes up to size 20. Eight different colors. Lined. The fabric is described as substantial. I haven't seen it, but the dresses I bought were very well made, so this has a good chance of being well made too, I think.

Thank you so much, Inge! Everyone should be so lucky as to have you for a virtual shopping companion. I will have to get to work trying some of these on. I want that lovely feeling of slipping into a men's suit jacket, but with just enough tailoring to add some femininity to the shape.

Ledonna - The symphony was a touring production that partners with local orchestras. Looks like they were at the Chicago Symphony a while back, but keep your eye out! It was a lot of fun, with much of the audience in costume or Pokemon gear.

JAileen - As is often the case, I was at the high end of the dressiness scale. You made me laugh with the western boots. Yesterday, at the gym, I noticed a pair of cowboy boots, complete with spurs, next to the coat hangers. Guess you can't wear those on the treadmill.

Suz - You are too sweet. I was just thinking that my son is really only a few years younger than your daughter, but college still seems so far away. I suppose I felt the same way about high school a few years ago, though.

Oh, JAileen! I meant to add that my mom was always known for her blazers (so much so that, after she died, the women in her office all wore them to honor her), and almost all of hers were from Talbots. I have several of them (mostly plaid) in my closet now, and they definitely are quite well-made. They run large, too, as the 14s are a great fit on me.

First off, happy birthday to your son! Is 16 driving age where you live? I remember my daughters' 16th birthdays as my personal liberation days - no more mom-as-taxi-driver duty! They were both first in line at the drivers' license office when it opened on their birthdays.

Ryce - It is driving age! We live in a small, walkable town, though, and kiddo has little interest in driving yet. We'll make sure he does driver's ed and gets his license before leaving for college, but after a recent accident that killed a teenage driver from his school and severely injured another, I'm happy with waiting, too.

Jenn, YLF! And, wow, I think my style tendencies are converging with yours. For a party last weekend, I wore my Richmond pants with oxfords and a blazer and a simple drape-y top (merino though, not silk, as it's still pretty cold here. Although I do have a black silk tank otw...).

Coming back to add -- the Eddie Bauer Legend Wash blazer might work for you. Nice stretch but not knit, comes in a washed black, and they do Tall and Plus (though it's a fairly relaxed cut anyway).
