WIW: Birding at Tahoe

Thursday was a gorgeous but chilly morning. We were at a state park on the east side of the lake. In summer, it’s packed with people. There were only a handful of people there.

WIW: Patagonia, Columbia, REI, Salomon.
What we saw: lots of chickadees and nuthatches. Pictured is a white breasted nuthatch and a Clarks nutcracker.

They were doing prescribed burning and had a helicopter checking on things. I kept thinking about prescribed burns that got away from them. I hoped they knew what they were doing.

Great bird shots! Our backyard features a lot of chickadees and nuthatches too— plus big noisy blue jays trying to bully them away from the feeder.

Tahoe is so beautiful any time of year. I’m glad the trails and public lands are getting a bit of a rest after such a busy year for outdoor recreation.

LaP, we were at Sand Harbor SP. We get red breasted nuthatches at our feeders, so it was great to see white breasted and pygmy nuthatches. My husband got five new species for 2021 that morning.

Nikki, Tahoe is gorgeous. I lived there years ago, on the West Shore. I’d like to move back now that my husband is retired, but it’s not very practical. My shoes are Salomon.

Beautiful! We hiked today with our grandkids at a central Illinois state park. When we got out of the car, we saw the cutest little tufted titmouse, and again when we came back to the car. Also nuthatches. But when you’re with kids, it’s a little noisy and rowdy to spot many birds.

I dressed almost identically to my daughter, on the right in #3, with fleece lined pants, gray puffer jacket, hiking boots and knit hat.

What a great outing. I understand your concern about the occasional prescribed burn that goes out of check, but they really do prevent catastrophic fire. Great photos and perfect gear.

Looking at the photos is like a mini vacation! Thank you for sharing. Chickadees, juncos, nuthatches (white breasted and red breasted) and a family of mourning doves are the usual suspects at the feeder these days. DH is the bird guy, but I sighted a leucistic junco and DH saw it later and corroborated. Instead of the usual browny grey, it was cream coloured.

Oh how I love your birding photos and how you make gear look functional AND fab. The only "interesting" bird we have seen recently was a pileated woodpecker. Tahoe is one of the (many) things I miss about living in SF. There are lots of really fantastic getaways only a couple hours in any direction. Sigh.

Rachy, thank you. I took the jacket to Alaska in 2019. Maybe I posted a picture of it.

Shevia, thank you. I took probably a dozen pictures of the nuthatch, and this one was the best.

Slim cat, thank you. I’ve worn navy forever, but only started wearing grey after I went grey.

AJ, thank you. We went up on a perfect morning. The forecast was for wind that afternoon.

JamC, thank you. We are very lucky indeed to have such a beautiful spot so near.

Helena, thank you. The granite rocks are gorgeous, aren’t they? Unfortunately, the lake level is down. Hopefully we’ll get some snow soon.

Avicennia, my concern was that they were doing it when the forecast for the afternoon was for wind. The helicopter had a long cable with something at the end. I wondered what it was.

Suntiger, yes, you need to visit the jewel of the Sierra. Mark Twain called it, “the fairest picture the whole world affords.” He was in the area back when they were doing silver mining in Nevada.

Carla, thank you. We saw a leucistic (patches of white) red tail hawk once. I would have thought that would doom him, but he was doing fine.

Nemosmom, thank you. Funny, just down the lake a little bit is the only spot in Nevada you can see a pileated woodpecker. We’ve gone there many times to look for it.

Our woodpecker is practically family! The little bugger keeps pecking the same exact spot on our chimney (he has been a repeat visitor for several months now). DH patches the hole, but woodpecker comes back and pecks the patch out - just the patch. He sits in a nearby tree and chirps at us when we go outside. Very odd this one.

Nemosmom, I’ve heard of woodpeckers attacking houses before. I wish I had some advice for you.

Joyce, thank you. My shoes are Salomon. They are waterproof and have great traction. I think I took these to Alaska a couple years ago.

Joyce, I probably bought them at REI. I’ve been wearing Salomon for over ten years. My big toes curl up and the fit is good for me.
