WIW: better with a topper - YouLookFab Forum

I feel like I've posted a lot of outfits lately that are better without a topper, so here is one that is exactly the opposite. I like this tee+skirt combo with the pink moto over it, but I think on its own it's quite blah. Not terrible, but kind of boring and something seems off. What do you think?

I have a bit of trouble styling this skirt. It's great with a topper (either a casual jacket like this pink moto, or a blazer) but doesn't play so well with the fluid, looser tops I've been favoring recently. In the past, I've worn it with a tucked-in fitted tee and a skinny belt, but I'm not in that kind of style mood lately. So, how would you style this skirt? Preferably in a way that works both with and without the topper, since I need the topper for AC but I need to remove it outdoors. I don't want to purge it because it was made by my mom, and my threshold for purging mom-made (or me-made) items is a lot higher than for storebought items, so long as they still fit. Plus I like the print and it's very comfy.

To my eye the top is a little bit too long to wear with this skirt, and without the topper, proportionally. I'd try it with shorter tops, but that might not work well with the fluid fit you want. Or, try it with a vest?

I really like it both ways but it looks less sweet with the moto (even though it is pink!) I think the silver sandals add some edge too. I like Columbine's idea of trying it with a vest and tank.

Ooh, a vest! I don't have a short one right now that's not a sweater vest so I'd have to wait until it's a bit cooler though.

Re: shorter tops. I find I've been having this problem a lot lately. Most tops, especially fluid ones, are longer than they are meant to be on me because I am super short waisted. This particular top hits me around the hipbone, and that's shorter than many of my others. I don't really have many shorter ones.

Ah, I see. I have some similar problems re. length of tops. What if you try one of your cropped handmade pieces over a top, playing with proportions a little. Or, the vest idea.

I agree that this outfit is better with the topper, but I think it looks ok without it as well. It's just not quite as interesting as with the pink jacket. I think others are right and the length of the top is a little too long. I like the idea of a vest to add a layer that will work with the heat.

I was thinking of a cropped sweater (maybe hand knit). Maybe an unexpected colour combo...something in contrast to the purply-pinky print? Of course you could always go with white/ grey/ cream/ black/ ink, also.

Have you tried semi tucking the front in the outfit sans the topper?

Angie, I don't like semi-tucking into most of my skirts because the waists tend to sit too high for me to like the proportion with my longer tops. A welted top might work but I don't think I have one that works with this pattern.

Suz and Columbine, maybe I could try my turquoise cropped mesh sweater over a black tank. There is actually some teal in the pattern (the leaves).

Yup. I thought that might be the case - especially with a high contrast top. Try a low contrast top.

I love the look with the topper, sassy! Without a welt or a semi-tuck, I too think the top is a bit too long. I like the idea of the turquoise cropped mesh sweater over the black tank.
