WIW: Belted Tunic over dress? Do or Don't

I'm having a hard time with this tunic top. I am not liking it with jeans anymore. It seems too stiff. I don't wear trousers. I was a bit cold this morning and inspiration hit. I grabbed my pink belt and shoes and wore it open over my dress. I'm hoping it softened the look and added some interesting texture in the process. Does this work? How can I improve it? (Too late if it's a disastrous look because I wore it to work and to my DS's senior concert tonight!). Is it Serenely Elegant?

I'm not sure the necklines combine well and the overlaying tunic seems more delicate than the underlaying dress, I prefer the reverse.
It's a pretty top and it looks pretty on you. Maybe cropped jeans and a longish necklace to add some skin and some vertical interest?

Isabel, thanks for the nice suggestions. I see how the necklines are different. I tried the blouse with cropped straight leg jeans but didn't like it. I wonderif I need to shorten my crops to make them work with this top. I am going to try folding them.

Btw, have you tried wearing the tunic belted over a pencil skirt or pair of jeans?

I love the idea but I think it would look a little cleaner with a different neckline underneath the tunic. Scooped neckline for instance. Or a pencil skirt and cami. The colour combination is perfect.

That's a creative solution, and I like the look. I like Angie's idea of removing the necklace.
I also like a dress worn as a skirt--i.e.,without the top part of the dress showing. It's something I rarely think to do, though.

Angie, I didn't think of belting the tunic with jeans, great idea. I really like the idea of wearing it that way with a pencil skirt. I typically wear this tunic unbelted with a white scoop neck tank top underneath, but it's time to change it up!

I agree about removing the necklace, not a great choice.

UmmLila, I have paired this dress with both my white blazer and my white jean jacket. In fact, I get a lot of wear out of this dress. It's one of my favorites and it's usually easy to mix and match with other items in my closet. The same is true of this pink belt. It's funny how I can never predict what item is going to become a wardrobe workhorse.

I'm glad you are coming up with new styling ideas because it's a really pretty top.

I can also see it as a sort of post-beach type garment. You know...you throw it on with a pair of linen shorts and a tank underneath after a day in the sun....

I'm a little torn about this actually. I like it but I can also see what the others are saying about the neckline. I do really like how the pink belt and shoes tie it all together. And love some of these other suggestions for ways to wear it.

The tunic has a pattern and the dress has a pattern and they kind of compete IMO. I really want to see the whole dress. It's really pretty. I like the pink accessories with the dress. The tunic might look nice with jeans and a denim colored top underneath, making a column of color, with color peeking out through the holes.

I think the necklines fight a bit, though it's not a deal-breaker.
What I would say is that the top looks fantastic belted , and what you are in effect getting is the pencil skirt look with good color combination, so , so if you have some other skirts you might play with, see if you find something that gives the same effect but no neckline issues.

Unfrumped, I have another patterned skirt with similar colors and I thought it might work. I am going to try it.

Suz, I have to agree that the eyelet pattern allows this blouse to dress down for a casual beach day. I love that idea because we often go to a beach at a local park and then out for brunch at a diner on the WE in the summers.
