WIW: asymmetry and crops

. . . in two of this week's outfits.

1-2: asymmetrial, mixed-print big shirt with funnel neck (made by me), over cream ballet layering neck tee (Tees by Tina), navy skinnies (Stehmann), spectator heeled oxfords in neutrals (Fidji)

3-4: tie-dye-like print t-shirt in pinks and greens (made by me), olive cropped cargos (Sanctuary), metallic floral belt (Fossil), same oxfords as above, with and without bright orchid long cardigan (Eddie Bauer)

I always like to know what's working and hear your ideas for improvement.

Wow, I love that first shirt! It is so unique and amazing! Ditto for the second top; I predict that all the Elegant Eclectics will be drooling! It reminds me a bit of the silk top that Ingunn wasn't sure she could rescue (and then did).

Another EE drooling all over these shirts. The cardigan covers some of the best detail of the tee but looks fine if needed for warmth.
Are the two sides of the first shirt supposed to be asymmetrical? If so, I think I'd like to see more of a difference to look intentional. In the photo it looks like it could have been buttoned crooked (it's probably just the photo). Love the prints you used and neckline.

Joy, thanks! Yes, the shirt has one long and one short side on the front. It does have the effect of being buttoned crooked, especially with the cowl neck, which adds to the uneven look. That was my first impression of it, too, but the idea kind of grew on me. It's kind of a head-scratcher of a look, though! I think it does look a little more intentional without a cream layer underneath (which is peeking out at bottom in my photo).

Wow! You are like our resident Eileen Fisher. You make the most beautiful, drapey delicious knits, Firecracker. I LOVE both of them. What interesting tops and so in line with your style. I absolutely die over the simple raglan with those cool cropped pants. So sleek and sporty and stylish all rolled into one fab package!

ETA: I also love how you pair your handmade items with purchased. They always fit together so seamlessly--attributed to your mad sewing skilz!

Ah, yes, the cream layer probably makes the shorter side look longer. This is so pretty from the back too and you could also do a semi tuck if you wanted to change it up a bit.

Joy, I'll have to try a semi-tuck--good idea! I should have added above that I've had someone ask me, when I was wearing a different version of this shirt, whether it was buttoned wrong. Ha ha! One of the downsides of eclectic!

Ooooh, the tye-dye shirt in #2 is amazing. It looks even better with that fossil belt. You have amazing style and a lot of your items are so unique because you make them yourself. Those oxfords look so modern with cropped pants.

WoW! I am in love with the blouse you made. So gorgeous (yes, I'm an EE). You could definitely do a semi-tuck for a slightly different look.

Marvellous, quirky fabric and so clever of you to make it up in a quirky style. I love the line of the tee and crops, especially like the slanting hem on the crops. You look great in orchid-are you wearing your purple specs? I am on iPhone and can't tell.

* Wiping drool off the keyboard* Another EE chiming in to say how fab you look! Both your own made tops are TDF. The purpley/pinky tones really suit you Firecracker and echoing what Kellygirl said about #2, sporty and elegant at the same time. Keep up the good work

Just made a trip to JoAnne's (not much in the way of fabric stores here). The trick to beautiful garments is always as much in the fabric choice as in the careful construction. You've got a great eye for fabrics!

The pink/green combo is rich and sophsiticated - a grown up "girlie" look with terrific details and a casual silhouette.

I'm trying to decide if I want to buy a pair of "gear" cargoes for Summer, and I keep wishing they were more tapered at the bottom. I wonder if tapering these would give a modern "ruching" appearance to the bottom of the pant leg. Just a thought!

Lantana, I'm wearing the purple specs in the first outfit. In the second I have on dark brown tortoise with a rim of green.

Beth Ann, thank you! Those cargos have a tab to ruche up the outer side. They aren't quite as tapered looking as the current style, though. You should try shopping online for fabric. These fabrics came from Marcytilton.com and sewingworkshop.com. I also like emmaonesock.com.

Terrific tops (and hair :-)) I love the second one with the cardigan so I can see all the detail and I love the first one but might like it even better with the sleeves scrunched up.

Thank you, Shevia. Actually, I did roll up the sleeves most of the day. I like the shirt that way, too. And I agree with you and others that the tie-dye top looks better without a sweater; I like the mis-matched sleeves, or how the full color spectrum shows. I will have to wear it more while the weather is warm!
