WIW and WTW... Sad Friday - YouLookFab Forum

We received news yesterday of the death of a dear friend that we unfortunately haven't seen recently. His death was such a shock and I am heart broken about it. Good memories and wishes that we had done that coffee, drink, get together that we kept talking about doing. He was a significant part of my and DH's lives for a long time and it feels like his passing is the end of an era. He passed away late last week and there will be a wake/celebration of life/memorial at his house this evening.

This was what I wore to work today...

I am contemplating what to wear tonight... it certainly won't be a churchy funeral thing. The invitation was to celebrate his life by listening to his favourite music, drinking his favourite drinks and eating his favourite foods. He was an fabulous artsy and eccentric guy and funeral formal just doesn't seem right. What would you wear?

I am sorry about your friend. I think I would wear what I would wear to see him to listen to music and so on, but I am not very good at the etiquette for these things.

Sorry about your friend. I would wear whatever feels right - this would have to be an occasion where the intuitive & emotional part of dressing comes to the fore imo

So sorry about yoru friend. I would say wear whetever you feel would be appropriate given the other attendees you know, but maybe since it is a celebration of life, something a bit lighter would work.

Hil - I'm so sorry to hear of your friend's passing. What a terrible shock for you and your husband. I like the idea of the celebration of his life - what a wonderful way to remember someone. I think I would want to wear something that he would have enjoyed seeing you in.

My mind's running the same way as donna and shannon. Wear what you would have worn to get together with him. My great-aunt wore an orange dress to her husband's funeral because he loved to see her in orange.

Honestly it sounds like you can't possibly go wrong with an event like this. I think I would wear dressed-up jeans!

I'm so sorry Hil. I went through something similar a few years ago and know how you are feeling. It's a good reminder to take the time to express how we feel about someone all along the way and make time to get together. Sounds like a perfect way to gather and remember a treasured friend. I would wear something you would have worn getting together write him!

Sorry for your loss. I would wear something you would have worn to have dinner with him. Something that you are comfortable in and that will let you reminisce about all the good his life brought.

Very sorry about your loss...know how it feels when you do not have a chance to say some last, important words to a loved one. I say, wear what you would wear if you were getting together with him for an evening, for that's what you will be doing with his eternal spirit. Blessings on you.

Very sorry about your loss. Friends are so missed and it is so easy for life to get in the way of gatherings along the way.

As to what to wear, I would not go traditional formal, funereal garb, but I would go a bit understated or simple. When a colorful, vibrant friend died unexpectedly several years ago, someone put out the word to honor her with bright attire at the service. I have to say there were mixed reactions to it, even among her intimates. Every situation is different, but I was most comfortable not using my outfit as any kind of statement in this case and had no regrets.

Sorry for you loss. I would dress like I was going out with him for that drink.

So sorry to hear about this... do you have anything that reminds you of him? Something you bought while with him or that was a gift? Maybe you could build around that. Or just wear something you think he would like. *hugs*

So sorry for your loss, Hil. I agree about wearing what your friend would have liked. Or imagine that you were going to do something you've been talking about and dress accordingly. I think this gathering is a really nice way to keep his spirit alive. And I really like your work outfit!

So sorry to hear about the sad passing of your dear friend. You should dress to feel like yourself. Something a bit drapey on top and a little arty as a tribute to his passions. I always like seeing you in the criss-cross stripe skirt like the bailey. The topper you have on in the picture above is lovely and I like seeing you in purple as well.

I agree with the others. Wear what you would to get together with your friend. No need to stick to black or classic.

Thanks everyone - I just wanted to check back in and say your words were immeasurably comforting for me last week. And again today as I
re-read them. I hope noone thought I was shallow posting a WIW and WTw - it was a good distraction from the ache.

Greg's send off was beautiful and entirely Greg appropriate. In fact his farewell party was just like one of his life parties. Amazing people from all walks of life gathered together. We laughed and shed tears and drank his wine and listened to his songs. I may never be able to listen to another BeeGees song without crying. How can you mend a broken heart?
