I did a physical inventory of my closet (and Rubbermaid totes). I'm at 480. Yikes. I think about 300 is a good number for me. I'm gonna try to winnow it down by the end of my small closet experiment.

You look great! There must be some things you are not wearing, don't fit or no longer like in those Rubbermaid totes.

Ooh, starting to scale back in a fairly large wardrobe can be daunting. Been there, still not done. I learned that gradual editing works as well as sweeping. It's satisfying work. Congratulations on pulling together a number. That took some work.

Is that maroon with grey here, it's lovely! Before I purged my wardrobe (which took me almost 3 years I am a very slow purger) I had ~350 items! And now I am at ~150 and still feel I have more than I can wear.

Right-sizing a wardrobe takes an investment of time, but it pays off! Sounds like your on your way. Maroon and grey is on of my favorite combos.

480 pieces of clothing? Wow! It sounds like you have a daunting job ahead of you - good luck with it (and plenty of clarity to make your decisions easier).

My wardrobe is smaller than average but at one point I had a huge stash of fabrics and more books about sewing and knitting than I've seen in any library. It actually felt paralyzing (instead of feeding my creative spirit). So last year, I gave away 90% of it all. Very liberating.

The biggest lesson I learned from the big purge was not to pick out things to give away. Because the tendency is to pick fewer pieces than we leave sitting there. So I turned it on its head and started picking out pieces to keep. Only the books and fabrics I really wanted to keep, as in would buy them right then if I didn't have them. The rest were given away.

I feel a little silly, it seems like getting rid of old clothes should be easy. I'm hoping that talking a little bit about it will keep me focused .
Alexandra, I think a lightbulb just turned on for me. I'm gonna use would I buy it now as my purge standard.

I just got inspired and went through my clothes, thanks to this!

I've hesitated to do this, out of shame, because my wardrobe seems quite large to me, being spread out between a closet and a chest of drawers. But when I finally gutted up and did it, I was pleasantly surprised to find that I came in well under 300 items of actual clothing (coats, workout gear, shoes, underthings, and costumes excluded).

I have been purging pretty regularly over the past few years, as I buy, but it's still a plesant surprise

I love Alexandra's method of purging. One thing I like for me is "If I ran into [high school crush/person I admire] wearing this right now, how would I feel about that?" Often, I find that I'd feel icky about it in that circumstance, and thats' my impetus to get rid of it.

I love that top. And well, everything else too. I find myself thinking, "ooooh, she has an insanely awesome wardrobe - maybe she happens to be my size, and will post everything on Style Exchange." Is that terrible, or what? Ha ha.

Really though, I think that it's harder to weed out when you don't have any items that are really awful. There's nothing obvious to get rid of, so you have to get a lot more critical.

Fantastic outfit on you, Shedev - one of my favourites yet. It seems reflective, which makes sense given your current project.

You will feel SO much better after you finish this edit. Okay, admittedly, I like to purge almost as much as I like to buy (maybe even more) but it does bring such clarity and new creativity.

I am trying to get my closet down to size as well. When my boys left home I took a bedroom and made a closet. You would think you could contain your stuff to a whole room. It has since grown from a full room to take on space in 4 other closets. Good luck.

Angie 11 out of 10-cool.
Florence- I'm really short so I'm sure my pants would be floods on you. My last big purge was based on things that no longer fit, so it was easier. This one will be tougher.
Suz- I'm sure I will feel much better. I do have a really small closet but a lot of drawer space and I'd like everything to fit.
Vickie- I set up my spare bedroom as a closet too, until I broke 3 standing wire racks. I just want to say that your hair is absolutely fabulous.
