WIW 9.9 scarf season and a question

I read somewhere that a woman should always own at least one true designer bag in her life. So when I turned 40, I decided that would be the case and bought myself one. Then the flood gates were flung open, and I thought the same should hold true about scarves. In the years since , I've amassed quite a collection of scarves (not all designer of course- it's not "quite" how we roll here ) which I consider part of my every day look between September and April. Full on fall weather today, and could even have used a jacket, but this works for in and out of the car all day.

Suggestions for what kind of topper for this outfit would be welcome! I wear a lot of army green and need just the right fall piece to compliment this type of look . It would become part of my fall casual/work capsule, which I'm currently at work o n.

This combination would be very typical for me during the cold months. I love scarves and that Etro one is gorgeous.

I am not sure what your work look needs to be. If it is not super formal, I would suggest a mixed media type of coat ... something with interesting fabrics and maybe leather sleeves or pockets or trims. I think black and grey mix would work well with army green. So would cream. Tons of interesting stuff comes up if you search "mixed media coat" on Polyvore.

What a great outfit! That scarf is beautiful -- so rich. I love the interesting mix of colours and the textural play with the lacy sweater and tougher cargoes. That is also one amazing bag!!

I love Ummlila's mixed media suggestion. Otherwise, how about a leather jacket? Do you have one (or several)? Not sure about the colour for this particular outfit -- the ones I picked might be wrong. Navy would be great.

That's a beautiful scarf, Lisa. It looks great with this fab outfit, and I imagine it working with many other pieces in your wardrobe too. And you are preaching to the choir here, girl, I just cannot resist a good scarf;-)

I like Ummlila and Suz's suggestions for a topper. A great peacoat might be fun too. I like ink blue with army green, but you could also go for a bright colour like red, raspberry or royal purple (if that's your cup of tea, of course).

suz, viva - I think I like the idea of the stone coloured biker . I guess I wasn't going right for the leathers because I have so many of them (I know that sounds obnoxious but they have been a mainstay in my wardrobe for 30years) ...but I have never owned one in that colour. And maybe that's exactly what I need. Come to think of it, how cool would that look over my new slouchy pants and sweater? Hmm, thanks again ladies. You're bang on! And they are on sale to boot!!

lisa/ummlila - I just bought a mixed media coat in army green (of course) with black leather sleeves, or I'd look at one in another colour - lol; perfect idea though...

I'm eyeing a pea coat for winter (the milder parts of it anyways) and hope to find a raspberry colour. Or crazy magenta pink.

I second a leather or pea coat. With that green I like black or a grey best. If you want a color, how about tomato, orange, some shade of pink or this years dark red?

I am seriously considering that stone biker, although I need to see if the JCrew car coat works. How long will that sale last? And what is Danier sizing like?

BTW, my pea coat is a gorgeous deep blue-pink.

Nice look! That's a lovely scarf, and plays surprisingly well with the olive. I was also going to suggest a moto. You'll want a boxier shaped one to wear over this sweater though, something fitted won't work right. A very boxy and cropped blazer or a utility jacket/anorak would work, too. Basically any topper over a looser sweater like this is going to need to be roomy.

Vivian - I want a pea coat from JCrew - waiting until there is something in that kind of colour, which I'm not seeing yet. But again, a wool coat would be for winter months for me.

Danier sizing is a tad generous I find, but not ridiculously so. I wear an XS or S, depending on the cut. To be able to wear one fully zipped and over a sweater, I would wear an S. Mediums are always too big across the shoulders on me. And if I could find a navy leather jacket, I would be in heaven. I don't think I have ever seen one. Ever.

Aida - you're right, whatever I get needs to be roomy enough to fit over a sweater. It won't be this one - it's getting retired to the cedar closet for the winter after today- but it would have to fit over a cashmere tshirt or a plaid shirt. Getting pumped to go try on this Danier jacket. I am trying to stop dressing like a biker on my days off though...and here I would be doing it again. I drift too easily into that look and at some point in life, it needs to stop.

Is the stone colour the feminine alternative to black here?

IMO as long as it's not black it won't read biker particularly if you don't style it with other bikery pieces. If they made actual riding gear in pretty colors like stone or light gray, I'd toss my actual black biker gear in a heartbeat for it. But alas, it all only comes in black.

Aida - my question was kind of rhetorical Of course there is a huge difference between real gear and fashion leather ! I think this stone leather will be my answer to trying to look a little more feminine while staying true to my aesthetic sensibilities. You have biker gear? Cool! I bow down to you

retailgirl - you bet, but you know, if you only have a few special pieces, it makes them all the more special - I wouldn't want to be so used to it that I no longer appreciated owning a designer or higher-end piece! I get a thrill of pleasure wearing them - and just know I can rely on them to add a special something to the outfit.

Lisa, if you find a raspberry or magenta pea coat you like, please let me know. I am in the market for the same. J. Crew did one in a bright pink (maybe raspberry) last year and it can be had on ebay. But I'm not 100% sure of my size and fear ordering from there for that reason.

Suz - same here. I need to try on a coat and am not interested in tying up thousands of $ on my credit card shipping stuff back and forth. I am on the hunt and will keep you posted. I have some fashion industry friends I'm going to start bugging, but I fear their solutions will be Calgary or Toronto based. Anyways - on my list of things to do:)

I love this outfit. It's so simple in a way, yet the details give it a lot of interest: the beautiful, intricate paisley in the scarf, the cool studs on the purse, the texture of the sweater, and those metallic sneakers with their trim!
I like the idea of a light neutral leather jacket for you, too. If it's too hard to keep clean, you might look for a faux one.

Please tell us more about your scarf collection, and how it came to be, what brands, what is your shopping strategy, and can you share a pic?

I only started appreciating the power of a scarf in recent years... to date I have not been able to bite the bullet and invest in investment type scarves, because I was still figuring out my preferences (color, pattern, size, shape etc). But I can totally see the value in it.

Shiny- I can't show pics of my scarf collection, because the authorities would soon be knocking on my door .

It just is something I really like - with short hair it serves myriad functions (warmth, coziness, filing in where long hair doesn't ) . And I am a lover of fabric, textile design, pattern etc - and some of the best designers produce simply outstanding scarves. I love that stuff, plain and simple - they are pieces of art to me. Now, most of mine come from Club Monaco though - big huge silk squares or wool blend oblongs and a few from BCBG and are hardly precious, so.....

Lastly, my mother always said a coat needs to be worn with a scarf inside the neck - protecting the coat from makeup, lint, hair etc, and adding that finishing touch. To this day, a coat against my neck with no scarf in-between feels totally odd. My special ones are from Etro , Burberry and Alexander McQueen - and I will never part with them.

Love your outfit! My first thought was a peacoat, then a leather jacket as toppers. A magenta peacoat or maybe a grey leather jacket.
