WIW 8/22, per plan with a tweak: Red blue and gold! UPDATED below

I am not 100% sure I am totally loving this outift. I love the scarf but I can't figure out how to make it look non-airline-stewardessy. In other news, I added the gold belt and changed out the planned gold pumps for nude to calm things down a little.

Cobalt top: thrifted
Gold belt: YLF swap
Silk scarf: swap? consignment?
Red blazer: H&M
Navy skirt: J Crew
Nude pumps: Target
Blue satchel: B Makowsky

Any ideas about why I am not completely happy with this? Maybe it's my hair... it is definitely past its "use by" date and my Saturday appointment can't come quickly enough!!

Great scarf! I don't think it's the scarf that looks stewardess-ish - I think it's the top. Nice color but leaning towards a bit non-descript otherwise. Maybe something more fitted, in the red print category? I am drawing a total blank on your top inventory, but do you have a red stripe or some other that will make a pattern mix? Just looking again and I think it's the red on cobalt that you could change out (by eliminating the cobalt).

Be sure to show us any more options...

Something about it is reminding me of Giorgio Beverly Hills circa 1985 - all of the colors combined, maybe? And the pleat in the skirt makes it look like coulottes to me. You always look perfect, Mary, but I agree that this isn't a 10.

How about use scarf as a belt, instead of the gold belt? Or, take the scarf off, and tie it around the handles of your purse?

Otherwise, I'm thinking either the jacket or the top should be a neutral. White or beige would work. One of those items or the other. That would tone it down another notch.

And to be honest? I would not have thought "airline stewardess" until you mentioned it. now I can't get it out of my mind, and yes, i see what you mean!

I think it's the scarf that's throwing things off. Maybe leave the neckline bare for a more minimal look? One of the other tricks I have used with my square silk scarves is to fold into the length-wise rectangle as you have done, but then make a series of knots spaced 2-3 inches apart along the length stopping 6-8 inches from either end. Then put and double knot as you have done. The knots add interest as well as shortening the overall length so the scarf looks more like a necklace. You can increase the necklace look by tying the ends of the scarf at the back and letting the knotted section fall to the front.

I vote leave off the scarf and throw in those new green Kate Spade stilettos with the striped heels. Try minimal silhouettes worn in a maximal way. Keep the red blazer

It's the scarf. The short ones are really hard to tie without looking stewardish. Why don't you tie it to your purse?
I still like the outfit though!

Zapotee's suggestion about tying the scarf to your purse is a really good one. You get to use the scarf to tie the outfit together in a different way.
I will chime in with the others and say I think it's the way the scarf is tied that makes it "air-stewardess-y." The outfit could totally carry it's own vibe without the scarf.

.... but the outfit is still a winner, of course!

OK -- I agree that the whole effect isn't quite coming together, but I wanted to say I LOVE the skirt --- the inverted pleat is such a feminine, but tailored, silhouette. I'm ready to see more of it again.

I'd experiment with other ways of tying the scarf, too. Gaylene's knotted necklace idea is a very good one.

Thanks for the help, ladies! I agree, it was the scarf. I love it but it's hard to style.

So check this out... at lunchtime I went to JC Penney and picked up this cute bloue polka-dot blazer I'd ordered online for $14.95 clearance, and when I tried it on I decided it was an improvement over the red blazer. Tied my scarf to my bag (thanks, Zap, for the idea!) and felt a whole lot better. This photo is the best I can do in my office, but maybe you get the idea!
