Thank you all for your input! Some varied opinions here, which I expected.
Irina and Lyn67, I agree that a fitted knit dress is not ideal and that a looser shirtdress would be better, but I don't have any with long sleeves that can be worn now, so figured I could experiment with the knit dress and see if it works. The bottom, worn open, does not cling - it glides nicely over the pants, it is only the top part of the dress that clings. Since I would wear these pants with a body-con knit regular top anyway, it wasn't an issue for me.
Angie, Jaime, Star and Sisi, you are very kind, thanks! Glad to hear that short jacket works to your eye.
Suz, thank you! I am very happy with those light blue cargo pants. They have already been worn several times even if they are more of a summer-weight, and I think they will be workhorses this year.
Brooklyn, I think I know what you mean. I like it with the short moto, but would probably like it even better with a long topper. Unfortunately I do not have anything suitable. I think it would need a spring-weight drapey trench or similar in a length similar to the dress, and the only one I have is dark navy and would in theory go with this outfit, but I wanted to keep it light in colors. I have a drapey sleeveless trench/gilet in white, and I tried it, but it did not work to my eye as it is about 10" shorter than the dress. So I concluded that the long topper would need to be the same length as the dress or slightly longer.
