WIW 1/5: Black and navy for a sad day

Today I went to a memorial service for a former law partner of mine. I left the firm 15 years ago but I was there for 12 years and this man and I were the same age and were young lawyers together. He was the nicest guy in the world, funny, smart, and left a wife and four great kids. So sad. I got to see a lot of old friends and colleagues, but... so sad.

Anyway, I felt like this was appropriate yet stylish.

Black pencil skirt: Halogen
Black "bird" blouse" Comptoir Des Cotonniers
Navy/black tweedy jacket: Banana Republic
Black pumps: Merona
Black satchel: Cole Haan

Ah Mary, you write poignantly...and you look perfect for the occasion. It always gives me pause when I want to send a silent message that's respectful and honoring of a friend whom I really admired. You definitely achieved on all counts. I hope he knew how much you respected him and I'm sure his family appreciated your presence. But I know the feeling -- loss is loss and sometimes it just sucks. Be nice to yourself, okay?

I'm so sorry for your loss, and for his wife and children. It's so hard to experience the loss of a partner and father too early. We should always keep in mind that we never know what may come and live thereafter.

Mary - the outfit is a perfect tribute to your friend. I'm so very sorry for you loss. I lost my first very close friend just after she turned 40. It was the moment I really understood the word - irretrievial. As Deborah said, each day is a gift, even the bad ones - we need to always cherish the moment becasue we never know how many we will have. It also made me tell my friends, in words, how I felt about them. I don't know about you, but I'm big on saying "I love you" and physical affection with my family, but I didn't do that with even close friends. My friend's death was the catalyst for me to tell my other friends how much they meant to me. When I did that it was incredible how much deeper our relationships became. I try to give love as a gift without expectation. It's the way I've found to honor her memory and make sense of her loss. Hugs to you and prayers for your friend and his family!!

I'm very sorry about the loss of your friend and former colleague. Death of those we know really gives one pause, doesn't it?

I'm so sorry about the death of your colleague. Those early work relationships can help form us both professionally and personally, and it is doubly hard to lose a peer so early.

You look elegant and understated here. I checked my funeral mini-capsule last fall for fit and condition (not a time to discover a button is loose, or the fabric has faded). I expect to be singing funerals a lot more in the next few years -- many of the adults who invested in me when I was a child are passing on. I just visited a 97 year old who has already told me what he wants me to sing! It will be hard, but I am honored and so thankful to have something to give to honor him.

I'm so sorry for your loss. It's sad that as we get older, these losses seem to happen more frequently. Like gryffin, I was never much for saying "I love you" to those outside my immediate family, but my dearest friends and I have started telling each other this over the last year or so. I think we've had enough reminders of our mortality that we're not taking each other for granted so much. Best wishes to you and the family of your friend.

Una, yes! We had a grand old time honoring him by sharing memories. One of the things he was famous for was hacking into somebody's email (like the managing partner or the firm administrator) every April 1 and sending out a firm-wide email saying something crazy and funny but just believable enough that every year a few people were fooled. Like, "We are pleased to announce that next year our firm will have a float in the Rose Parade on New Year's Day." Or "From now on, as a business development requirement, all junior lawyers will be required to have a giant magnet with the name of the firm stuck to their cars." Anyway, they had printed out a lot of those emails and blown them up to poster size so we could enjoy them and reminisce at the reception. Good times, man. Good times.
