WIW 0523: Crazy Cobalt - YouLookFab Forum

This outfit is a winner. It's bold, polished, feminine yet rough around the edges. This is the perfect blend of polished and RATE I'm going for. I don't have many comfortable sandals or warm weather shoes, bug it happened to be chilly this morning so I put on the trusty Fluevogs.

This was the outfit I mentioned in this post that I wanted to wear but was concerned about its dressiness:

Because I wore boots, it took the "too polished" look off. At least 80% of my dresses MUST look good in my tall flat boots. It's a requirement. Instead of a more polished jacket, I wore yesterday's moto jacket again. I really need to stock up on more motos or edgy modern collarless jackets in more RATE fabrications!

Happiness factor in the outfit? VERY. The moment I walked out the door to work, I was comfortable and happy. Bonus points on the compliments I've received!

My partner pointed out to me once that I had a signature look. We were both playing a video game and the main character had a colourful above the knee/mini-dress on and tall low heel boots. He commented, "hey that character looks like you! The dress and the boots, especially!" Every time we'd see a character or actress wearing a graphic dress and tall boots, he'd point that out! So I guess I have a "signature style" after all!

I love how (lack of a better term) bad*ss I feel in this outfit. And I guess that's what I want. I don't care for ultra feminine and I don't care for superhero warrior either. I just need to feel sweet with the right dose of tough.

Perfect!!!! That's exactly how I would describe my style as well! Not overly sweet and not super RATE either. A perfect dose of both is just what I love

Yay! Style sisters! Yup, that's exactly me. I really love these "ladylike" elements such as wrap dresses, richer jersey, etc.... But I gotta edge it up a bit! And also, the comfort factor. Jersey dresses don't bind and suffocate me!

And thanks interesting how I just remembered my "signature uniform" when I wore this dress!

How will you adapt it for Summer?

@Angie: I'm trying to figure that out. I already know the slim dress would be a good base (straight pencil cut/slight a-line shift), but I need to change up footwear. My first thought is get dresses with sleeves and look for edgier low heeled footwear (you blog posts helped out with this!). For sandals and booties, I seem to do better with tailored styles than chunky as it balances out my slim legs. I'm debating whether I should purchase these today (tried them on yesterday)

I'm entertaining the idea of high vamped sandals as well.

I might also look into getting some lightweight blazers but I've been having difficulty finding those here in Toronto lately.

I guess it's just a matter of experimenting with footwear and whether or not to wear jackets with them.

PS thanks for posting the tube skirt ensemble. I fell in love with the Vince Camuto tube skirt everyone loves! You all made a (separates) convert out of me!

@jackie: I'm not sure. I nabbed this jacket at LOFT for 40% off and I've been wearing it to death! I wish some of Angie's recos are available in Canada! I try to avoid shopping online so much because I'm kind of hard to fit (except maybe the Maggy London brand - I'm a consistent size there).

I like those born sandals, KatieKat. A higher vamped sandal will give your dresses the hard edge you are looking for though. The low vamped ankle strap is very fashionable - but more refined and elegant.

I think our styles have a lot of similarities, actually. I'm also all about the dresses with the tall, flat boots and the sweet balanced with more RATE elements. (Although I think of it for myself more as something like "grounded" than as "tough." So a slightly different variation.) And I'd really wear that exact outfit, come to think of it, except maybe with a black boyfriend cardigan instead of the moto.

Maybe a black gladiator for your summer look?

@Angie: thank you so much for the suggestion! I'm going to hunt some high vamped styles down. I'm so happy that lower heels (below 2 inches) are in style now so it shouldn't be too much trouble! I do have a pair of high vamp sandals that I can wear!

@Aubergine: yay style twin!!!! I'd love to see more of your outfits and what you come up with! The boyfriend jacket sounds good. I wish those things worked on me... Maybe I haven't found the right one?

Cobalt is my favorite color to wear (besides black, that is). It's very bold and cool. I adore your tough moto over the soft dress, and the boots are great, too. Congratulations on finding your signature look! You definitely look BA!

KatieKat, I've been lazy about posting outfits lately but should definitely fix that!

And I was thinking more of a boyfriend cardigan than a jacket. I love how boyfriend jackets look but haven't had much luck finding any (or many jackets in general) that fit me right. Maybe one's out there somewhere, though!

@Aubergine: I owned a few BF jackets at one point and it wasn't flattering on me for some reason. Supposedly it's good for waistless types like me but I've found better luck with shorter jackets.

I tried boyfriend card is too. They look great on many but I can't get them to work either. Long fluid cardigans are different though.

Fathenry, are you Canadian? I found a lot of my jersey dresses at Winners. We now have a Marshall's too and that's where I found this one in particular!
