Hi friends, after Angie's post about wide crops, I decided to pull out the pair I bought several years ago but have not worn much. After wearing them for a few hours, the reason was clear - they are way too big around the waist! So today, I spent a few minutes doing that Pinterest hack where you feed an elastic through the waist and secure with a button (similar to those adjustable toddler pants lol) ... and am surprised at how well it worked! So trying these pants again today with the proper waist size to see if I enjoy them more this way, and if so I'll invest in having them properly altered (it will probably cost more than the pants *sigh*).

I do recognize that these are about as narrow as a pant could get while still qualifying as wide (the line does more subtly outward, rather than straight), but that seems right for my personal style. I do also find the style a touch 'clumpy' with the Birkies, and would rather a visually slimmer shoe or perhaps a heel ... but frankly I'm wearing neither these days so I'll just deal with the clump factor for now.

What do you think? Hit or miss?

I think that pants fit you really well, and I quite like them with your shoes, but you could of course try them with some heels.

Could you post a link to that hack? That could be very helpful for me, too -most of my pants currently need waist tailoring.

Tanya, for sure! Obviously not perfect, but good in a pinch, or to test whether it's worth spending on an alteration (and who's kidding who, I'm probably just going to wear these pants this way lol)

I think they look great! Love them with the Birks. I have the Gizeh style as well and totally understand the 'clumpy' feeling, but you look very streamlined to me!

We-ell, I don’t know. Tbh, I feel they’re kind of a miss. Not because of fit. They’re just... ‘so tan.’ Their personality... all right, I’m gonna start talking about the hipster horticultural center again. The one with plants, but you really go there to buy hand-thrown espresso cups... like me, I feel you’d buy the cups not sell them... lol, yeah, I’m a riot

Ok. I’m thinking button up shirt for these crops...

These are absolutely cropped flares. Well done on the half tuck—I tend to feel like I didn’t dress myself properly with one.

I think you look great in these! I do find waist alterations to be worth the money — the pants are always more comfortable afterward and don’t need hitching up (which I often find necessary even with a belt).

Rachy, thanks for always being so honest! I have to admit, I might be with you ... this might be one of those things that works in theory, but not (for me) in practice ... I was happy with the outfit until I actually had to run and errand ... at which time I ran up and changed into my white slim crops

The Birkies probably don't help with the hipster horticulture vibe hehe!

I think it's a cute outfit, and I love that teal t-shirt on you. I agree that it's outside of your usual style, though. Funny that you changed into your slim white crops to go out! I like Rachylou's idea of a button-up shirt for the cropped wide-legs. Or maybe a mariner striped tee. That would keep them more in your style zone.

Are you kidding? These are 100% hit! They look fabulous! Agree about having them tailored in the waistband, for a perfect fit. Note that I adore a hipster horticulture vibe :).

Joking aside, I like the shape of these and like the idea of a mariner top or slouchy linen sweater on slightly cooler days. They work with the Birkies.

Angie, these were the smallest size they had ... because I liked the style so much and they were hard to find (this was the early adopter phase of wide crops) I decided to chance them.

I love the suggestions to change up the top, e.g. to a mariner or something more structured like a button up ... I'll try it, thanks all! xox

FI, 100% ... the first time I tried skinnies in maybe 2009 (?) I thought, these are cute but there's absolutely no way I'd wear them, and left them in the store I AM open to the new cuts though ... I just think I need to find the right way to wear them!

PS - Can I be the nerdy backroom office assistant at the hipster horticulture center ... surely you'll all need someone who's good with Excel??

Ok, Rachy's image is unshakeable. Nonetheless I think you will be more likely to wear these if you tailor them and combine them with a different top as suggested above. But only if you want to!

I do that hack on my husbands pants because he is slim around the waist and refuses to go to a tailor. It works well.

I like them because they are as narrow as can be considered wide leg crops! I have one plaid pair that qualifies and would buy a solid if I found it. I think I would try a lower contrast top and do agree with many that the birdies look good. Thanks for posting your photo as it really helped me figure out what I should be looking for.
