WIW - slightly preppy early summer style

It’s 90 degrees today and I don’t love wearing shorts, especially this early in the year, when my legs are pasty white (as opposed to slightly less pasty white in a couple of months, LOL), but I just received this pair and decided to rip off the bandaid and expose the old legs to the outside world.

The shorts are a near dupe of my favorites, which I bought in Santa Fe back in 2019. The original pair is grey and they’ve been summer workhorses. The length, straight-cut leg, and fit of them just work for me. I looked in vain for the same shorts for years, and finally a pair popped up, new with tags, on Poshmark, in navy! I snapped them up.

Worn here with a new Caslon white gauze shirt. Breezy for the hot temps outside but long sleeves for inside the grocery store. I like the shorter length of shirts these days so I’ve been investing in them when I find a good one. I semi-tucked here but can wear this untucked too.

Accents of silver in my Jenny Bird bracelets, ring from the Gaudi museum a decade ago, Dolce Vita sandals, and Rag & Bone belt. Bag is from an artisan at the Smithsonian annual craft fair.

The overall effect with these shorts is a bit on the preppy side, but I don’t mind that as long as there’s a little twist on it.

In a couple of days we will be back to more seasonal temps, and I will need to get wear out of my spring stuff while I can!

That’s a great outfit Janet. I feel like I’m living on another planet temperature-wise though . Still barely above 0C here . I love shorts but find it almost impossible to find the right length and fit . What brand are these ? I’m also off to find those sandals - I could justify a new silver pair with some presence / chunkiness .

Yes, yes, and yes, from head to toe! I love preppy and, likely, always will. Your metallic Dolce Vita sandals are wonderful and for the first time in a long time I’m wearing a metallic belt, as well.

I like this polished casual outfit. I really like it. I think the accessories and the breeziness of the shirt make it lean away from preppy.

Lisa, thank you! These are G1 Paper Twill shorts and I believe they were offered in a variety of lengths. I’m not sure if they are still made — my searches always turned up results on resale sites.

I can’t believe it’s still so cold there! I was in NY state last week and even there it was warming up quite a bit. But they had late snow and some of the areas I wanted to hike were still closed, doh!

Thanks for the compliments! I wasn’t sure whether the chunky sandal was still a thing, but I do like them and they work for me. I let go of my two old pairs of lug-soled fisherman sandals and wish I still had the white ones, but they were getting really beat up. My sandals could use a little refresh!

I think that this type of edgy footwear is very much part of your style Janet so it will always look right. Doesn't mean you can't wear lots of other styles as well though - you also suit sporty and more minimal styles of sandal.

It's like pearls and light footwear are signature for Angie, and maybe Aviators are for me.

The proportions here are perfect - your legs look a mile long. The gauze shirt is just right with dark shorts too. I know what you mean about paper white legs; I ease into warm weather with linen crops before I break out the shorts.
