WIW - shortened plaid skirt with old sweater (bookending?)

I finally found time to hem one of the plaid skirts and wore it today with a very old sweater of mine. I thought this might need bookending, but I didn't have anything that would have worked. What do you think?

(I also think I need a haircut.)

I like the black boots with it because it goes with the tights. I don't like breaking up a look too much.

I like the sweater, just not sure about the sweater with the skirt. The texture of the sweater and the plaid of the skirt don't seem right to my eye, btu I have NOT figured out the pattern matching so popular andon trend.

I agree with Thistle. The sweater does not seem to "go" with the skirt -- which is my favorite kind of plaid. I think it's the thickness of the sweater. The plaid suggests density to my eye. I like where you were going with the lighter color and the fit, but the fact that the sweater's texture/weight does not suggest "lightness" which would balance the density of plaid. As a result the sweater seems to weigh the entire outfit down.

From the waist down I love it, perfect length and edgy boot. On top I would go with a lighter weight top or two lighter weight pieces like a long sleeve tee or turtleneck and a light weight cardigan.

Love the sweater and boots. I'm not sure about the sweater with it. I think it's a little too different in color somehow. I'm having the same skirt/top disconnect today!

I think another sweater would look better. I think the marled yarn in the sweater fights with the plaid, and I think the grey clashes a little with the plaid too. The plaid skirt and boots though are lovely.

I'd probably go for a darker top. I do like the skirt, it looks very nice on you.

Hmm I actually kind of like this as unexpected pairing, but I would like to see it with booties to lighten the overall look a bit.

Thanks everyone! I can see how the sweater isn't the best pairing for the skirt, it did feel off somehow. I'm going to try the skirt with something darker on top the next time! I guess I just wanted to wear the sweater today, so I didn't change out of it.

I wasn't planning to cut it all off, but I think I need to get my ends trimmed and a bit more shape.

Astrid, I think perhaps this shade of gray is too blue/cool for you. It feels like you and the rest of the outfit work together, and the sweater stands out as a bit awkward yes? I do think a sweater in this style, but in a warmer shade (it could even be light colored), would work really nicely with this skirt. It's such a cozy look!

The plaid skirt is divine and I really like how you've shortened it Astrid.

I was just looking at a Black Watch blazer of mine this weekend seeing if it was in good enough shape to get tailored but it's not. My heart bleeds, plaids and tartans are a love of mine.

Thanks Aida! It could be that the sweater is too light in general, but I think I do look good in it IRL. But I agree that it doesn't work with this outfit. I realised that I really don't have as many sweaters for winter as I would like, especially considering that I'm now wearing both skirts and pants again and therefore need tops in different lengths. I also have only one cardigan (the green one) that works with pants to wear over my tees and shortsleeved tops.

Thanks Freckles! I like it too. Now I just have to find the perfect top for it. I think my navy turtleneck would look great, but that was in the laundry.

Thanks Carole! I agree about the shape and style looking good with it. Maybe I'll look for something similar in a darker neutral.
