WIW - Retro Feeling - YouLookFab Forum

Hi ladies - When I first joined the forum I can honestly say that I had somewhat of a dress/skirt phobia as my legs are my least favourite body part. However after looking at various blog sites (especially Allie at Wardrobe Oxygen) and getting positive encouragement from you ladies I have spent the better part of this summer in skirts.

I've always liked feminine, romantic bohemian styles and wearing more dresses and skirts has also made me appreciate the slightly retro look. I really can't find any dresses/skirts in the shops currently that look good on me so I've been scouring thrift shops. I haven't been great at taking photos recently but here is a style snapshot from the last week.
Photos 1-3 - Kind of feeling 1960s Mod chick - bonus shot of grandson who loves the camera.
Photos 4-5 - I think you should cross my palm with silver - feeling swirly skirted and gypsy free
Photos - 6-7 - 1950s bombshell although slightly less bodacious than the likes of Sophia, Gina and their ilk

Oh, I can see why you might do better with vintage clothes. You are a curvy beauty and not a stick figure.
I love the old fashioned sex appeal that you exude in these clothes.

Oh my!!! I don't think I have EVER seen you looking so gorgeous. These are absolutely stunning. You look fun, flirty, fresh, and 100% fantastic!

The details in #1 are absolutely lovely and just look at the way the attention goes straight up to your beautiful face.

#2 is so flattering to you. In all of these looks you've picked JUST the right shoe to do the job. These little red ones are adorable! Love how you are making a lower vamp work for you.

And the blue in #3 is just WOWZA!

Have you changed your hair colour a bit? It looks terrific, as does your cut, but your cut always looks fab.

I think every single one of these outfits is a stunner on you Kiwi - I'm so glad you got over your phobia (which was completely misplaced BTW) and started to wear dresses and skirts. Love the shape of #1, the fun vibe of #2 and the gorgeous colour of #3!

Each of these is stunning on you! I love fit of the first dress, the fabric color and pattern of the skirt in the second, and the blue belt and other details on trhe third. What Suz said! #8 brings back lots of memories. I wish I still had my dresses of that style, although they would have to be worn as tunics now.

Oh, my. The second and third looks are an 11 out of 10 - just perfection! And the first dress is also very flattering! Now that you have found looks that work for you, you definitely should NOT shy away from skirts and dresses because you look fabulous!

Joy - I grew up in the 60s and of course a lot of the TV I watched on the 70s was 60s reruns so I have a real soft spot for that style - I wanted to be agent 99 - I loved her hair and Mary Quant wow.

So glad you've discovered the wonders of the dress! They are the coolest garment for summer, by far, and they truly let you shine. All of these are terrific, but my favorite is the first dress.

HOW did you ever manage to stay *out* of skirts and dresses when you look this beautiful in them??

I can't decide which outfit I like best. It's not just the garments being beautiful but the very clever styling too. Like the way the lines of the mod trim on that dress are reinforced by your sandals --- utter perfection!

Or the red sandals' trim straps echoing the dainty print of the swirly skirt --- and what great proportions on that retro-ish elbow-length cardigan/twin-set!

But I think my favourite example of superb styling is the blue belt and bangle with the silvery necklace in that last outfit. The belt balances the proportions of top and bottom so VERY neatly and exactly, extending as well as emphasizing your waist length. And the cuff and necklace chain bring elements of the top to the bottom half and vice versa. Perfectly poised. Very artistic balance for all its apparent simplicity.

I think you look gorgeous in all 3. Retro-inspired, but you look totally current and these silhouettes are great on you.

You look stunning. You can certainly rock dresses and I love the vintage vibe. You should definitely build on this style.
