WiW - More neutral, more color, in the rain

It's supposed to dump a foot of rain over the next few days in Northern California. I love the rain, and think we don't see enough of it, so I'm excited. Or, at least I was until I had to brave the commute back home.

I was planning to leave home wearing the denim jacket over my cords and sweater (pic 4), but the gray day and the rain persuaded me into wearing a colorful scarf (2) and a trench instead (2,3).

I like how this turned out - happiness factor high. What do you think? Color, proportions, ideas for kicking it up a notch? Thanks for looking and commenting - I welcome your feedback.

Number one is sleek with everything fitting very well, but to my eye it seems to need something more. The scarf as in number two does the trick. Another idea would be to layer a boldly striped button-down shirt underneath the sweater. You could allow the tails to hang beneath the shirt if the proportions are right. You look cozy for a wet day.

I don't think you need to change a thing. Good choice to swap for the weather but I love the denim jacket on you too.

I love the way you've tied your scarf! If the rain comes down in buckets (are they saying Friday it will?), I would worry that corduroy would absorb the water like a sponge, so today was a good time to wear them along with your boots which look like they have a decent but stable heel. You look great!

Love this scarf typing method! I use it a lot in my Chicago winter. I actually prefer the look with the trench, although the denim jacket is a great fit and color.

I love both versions of this outfit! The denim jacket looks great over the longer top but the trench and scarf look perfect for a cold, rainy day.

Ceit - thank you! I call it the pretzel tie, but I don't know if it has other names. It works really well with a longer scarf, and helps me stay warm.

Joy - great idea! I have a striped equipment shirt that might do the trick. I'm eager to try it out soon!

Donna - I can't wait for the big rain; anything to make the hills turn green. I love these boots, and have had them for a while. They're now naturally distressed, which I love, and yes, the heel is very stable.

Beth Ann - thank you, I love this scarf tying method too, and wish all my scarves were long enough.

Ooh, I like the first outfit! This looks a lot like what you were trying for yesterday, but (to my eye) the scarf's color and shape blends much better into the outfit. I love and use that knot all the time, too -- it's much less bulky than the euro knot, isn't it?

I think I might like your cozy-in-the-rain outfit better than your originally-planned one. You have a fantastic figure (and therefore don't have my hangups), but the light-colored sweater paired with dark denim and cords would draw attention straight to an area I'd like eyes to skim over. Just to be clear, you do NOT have any issues there and the proportions are great -- but if I were to copy this outfit, I'd personally drop the color contrast either between the jacket and the sweater, or the sweater and the cords.

Fab scarf! Really like it with the Gray sweater. I wore my Gray sweater today with a deep yellow scarf.

I think the grey is lovely here. It is a lighter grey which works well with the darker trousers. And a fun scarf.

Charmian - I suck my gut for photos :). I do have 40+ belly flab, I am sorry to say. It just doesn't show much because the sweater is not too snug of a fit. I like this outfit better too, for the contrast between the scarf and the sweater. And, yes, I love this knot.

ASingh - thanks! IMO, the vibe I'm going for here is one that you accomplish with ease in your WiWs. I loved the gray and yellow, and liked your interpretation is much better than the original.

Suz, thank you. I LOVE this scarf, and can't stop wearing it ALL the time.

I, too, thought it had a Euro chic vibe and to satisfy my vanity, I took a picture with aviators (because, you know, I think they emphasize the Euro Chic Vibe). Of course, the picture is a classic blooper and, just for fun -- and because, you know, I have vanity but I also have no shame -- I'm attaching it here.

The original outfit was nice. But it was designed to fade (gracefully) into the background. Adding the scarf added that little touch of joy that I am always so happy to see. Serenely neutral is a wonderful place to be sometimes, but joyful is more fun.
