WIW - Meh X 3 - YouLookFab Forum

Here's a collection of outfits that I think are fine, but not great. I wouldn't re-wear them.

#1 - This skirt is always tough for me because it needs a shorter top and I don't have any in the right colors. I tried it with this gold sweater (which ends up looking beige) and it's...fine.

#2 - These are new flats that I thought would look cute with the flared skirt but again it's just...fine. Also, closed toe shoes are too hot for this time of year. I like the shoes but think they'll have to wait for cooler temps before they're in my regular rotation.

#3 - I cut off a pair of blush crops that were hand-me-downs and never fit quite right. I'm not sure I like how close the blush is to my skin tone. I didn't notice that issue when they were longer. I don't hate it, but I don't love it either. I'm haven't figured out what I'm going to do with the shorts.

I actually really like #1 a lot - and I love the shoes with it! Gold and navy is one of my favorite combos.

Ditto to texstyle, I like #1 a lot and I like #2, as well (do you have a thin belt you could add for an experiment? Or a scarf?).

And the tank in 3 is so pretty - do you have white jeans to pair them with or another color pant that plays off of the florals?

I echo what JuniperGreen said. The flats are awesome and I like how they pick up the blue dress and caramel necklace. Do you have shorts or pants in one of the colours of the print on the tank top? A more saturated pink/blush or green may add some extra attitude to outfit #3.

PS Why did I never think of making shorts out of chinos? Great idea!

I love 1 and 2 as well, although I understand about not wanting to wear closed shoes right now. The print tank top is very pretty.

#1 While I agree this outfit is supercute, I see your point of meh here. I imagine you are seeking to go for a different vibe with this interesting skirt pattern. My feedback is this: you did well to go towards the gold, as it should complement the navy in a "not in your face" way. But once on, gold doesn't bring you as much joy as you expected. I feel you want to play down the skirt's "girly" vibe. Why not try white, and tuck it in?I suggest a bad-ass version: Converse, skirt, sleeveless crisp white shirt or white tee, tucked, and bomber. Or booties, tank and sleeveless denim jacket. Just for fun.

#2 This is a fun, fresh summer outfit and you look so good in it. Again, I ee your point with those shoes. I imagine them with cropped pants in a complimentary tone, so they'd pop out, instead of trying to match the same colour. I have such pointy closed toe flat summer shoe and they are very useful with the pants silhouette; not so much with skirts or dresses.

#3 Wow, what a nice job you cropped these well. I don't find them too close to your natural tone. Maybe because of the black? But this as it is is a winner to me.

I like that tank in #3 the best. I don't see the issue with the shorts but maybe that's because my monitor isn't rendering the colour accurately.

Sara, I'm wondering what makes these outfits say "meh" to you....When that happens to me, I ask myself questions like these: what's the message I want to communicate with my outfit?; how do I want to feel?; what's keeping me from delivering that message/feeling the way I want to feel in this outfit? What could I change to bring that about? Lots of times, thinking about it in this way will help me adjust the outfit so that I like it, or help me see that it doesn't fit my style anymore. Maybe you've already thought about this....otherwise, just something to consider....:)

I like the first outfit a lot, too. I understand the issue with tops and skirts, but to my eye this looks fab.

The top in #1 looks gray on my laptop! No wonder I have such color problems when ordering items online. I really like the shoes and the shoes on YOU with the dress in #2 -- so maybe the only issue was that the day was too hot for you to enjoy the outfit? And before you give up on the blush shorts (unless the fit really bugs you), I would try them on at various points in the season if your legs change color. To my eye, they have sufficient contrast, but that particular top might look better with white or a more intense color.

#2 stands out for me. I really like those flats with the outfit.
To my eye the blush shorts in 3/4 look fine and pick up the pink tones in the top, but I understand your reluctance. I passed up peach colored pants that looked like I was not wearing any bottoms from a distance. If that is how you feel, let them go. The cuffing makes them more visible.

I quite like #1 and #2 but see what you mean about the shorts. Maybe they would look more "visible" with lower contrast? Cute tank. Super cute shoes in #1, I have some similar that I hesitated to buy but have been wearing a lot and feeling fab in (haha so I guess I'm biased!).

I love all of these, I don't find them 'meh', at all! Your outfits are kind of what I'm aspiring to this summer - cute, cool, easy, in 90-100F weather.

I love the contrast of the black with the blush. Have you experimented with other black tops in other silhouettes? I would try a longer, more relaxed short-sleeve black top, to offset the fitted style of the shorts.

Thanks everyone! I think my problem with #1 was that I thought the top was too washed out and made the outfit look bland. However, it sounds like it that's not really a problem. I do really like how the color of the shoes and top coordinate.

Krishnidoux - I love the idea of wearing the skirt with sneakers. I'm going to give that a try soon. I have some white tops but I'm not sure they'll work - most are too long and don't tuck well.

I'm happy the hear that the blush color of the shorts isn't as bad as I thought it was. I love the tank and have been wearing it with white shorts or light blue denim shorts. Unfortunately I'm bad about taking pictures on the weekends when I wear most of my casual short outfits so I don't have any photos of it with other bottoms.

These outfits are better than you think, Sara. I like #2 a whole lot, and that tank in #3 is fantastic. Do you think you're feeling the lack of a third piece? I always feel a little like I'm not trying in the summer when I wear fewer layers.

What everybody else said: better than you think.

#1. The gold necklace and ghillies are perfect with the navy, but I think there's a mismatch between the clear colors and value contrast of the skirt and the muted color and soft texture of the sweater. A skirt like that doesn't play nice with many tops, but a solid white or navy would look crisp and put together and would let the beautiful necklace show up more.

#2 is pretty as is, but I think you could give the eye somewhere to land in all those stripes, maybe a more substantial necklace inside the neckline or (since you have a defined waist) a belt.

#3/4. I think blush pink is a neutral, so that doesn't bother me at all. The color may be a bit muted for that particular top, if you want to get picky, but especially with those black flats, I'd wear it and be happy.

Jenn - I don't think it's the lack of a third piece. That's never really worked for me. I don't particularly like to layer so don't actually wear many toppers even in the fall/winter. As long as I have interesting shoes and some jewelry, I feel put together. My jewelry choices change between summer and winter. I wear more bracelets in the summer since they can be seen with short sleeves. I wear more scarves in the winter instead of necklaces.
