WIW - first time out with my new summer dress

This feels a bit too tame, but with the heat we’re having I couldn’t be bothered to wear anything else. It’s supposed to be 39 degrees Celsius tomorrow and for the rest of the week. I’m dreading work, we have no air con and it’s stifling even when the temperatures aren’t as high. I’m planning to wear a few other dresses with Birkenstock sandals, so as breezy as possible. I’m wearing this summer dress for the first time, I got it on a deep discount a while ago. It’s thin cotton lined with cotton, quite breathable. And I’m wearing my new watch of course.

I’m not sure how long ago I posted a real WIW picture, but it has been a while. Now I have a new tripod, so maybe I’ll be able to go back to taking pictures more regularly. Especially because I need quite a few new things, my wardrobe could do with a bit of a refresh in certain categories.

It is a very pretty dress Astrid, so I think I get it. It fits you to perfection and looks very polished for a hot day. That said, I don't really feel myself in "pretty" things either, even if others don't see it that way.

Thanks Texstyle - I think we’re on the same wavelength here. If our summers continue to be so hot I really need to figure out what to wear to feel more like myself. But I’m not doing any more summer shopping this year.

Thanks - I actually wasn’t outside much, so most of the day was spent barefoot. But these shoes work well in the heat, for a few hours at least. They’re really soft and lined in leather.

I had a plumber here this morning and it took hours longer than expected, so I didn’t do much with my free day. At least I don’t have to pay all those hours myself (it’s a rental and a bit of a mess). I’ve been living here for two months already and it’s still far from done.

You look cool and comfortable. I think your hair keeps the dress less “pretty,” meaning it would look differently if you had long ringlets. Your shoes, too, are more tailored and less pretty.

Good luck with the heat. I read about it returning to Europe. What’s up with this summer? We break records all the time, it seems.

I don’t know what 39C is in F, but I’m pretty sure it’s very hot. I was visiting friends in NJ over the weekend and with the heat index it was 114 F, which was brutally hot. I was very thankful to have air conditioning!

Karie, it's not quite as hot - I just looked it up right now and it's 102,2 degrees Fahrenheit. But that is very hot around here. I think the highest temperature which was officially recorded so far is slightly over 104F. No idea how hot the 102.2 degrees are going to actually feel though... Especially without air conditioning. 114F sounds crazy, I think I would die...

Astrid, I struggled with ‘pretty’ summer dressing too, until... ankle pants and fitted (but not bodycon) sleeveless tops!
That being said, I love your dress! Summer can also be nice that way, allow us to branch out a little.

So fresh and cute! You’re right, this isn’t your typical style, but you wear it well—that smile (slightly impish?) does the trick! Keeping the accessories simple /functional and choosing those flats make it work for you.

I do think we can mix up things from our typical style a little. I do love a sundress so this appeals to me.

Thanks everyone! I'm happy to be back, I missed participating regularly.

It's 19.30 and I'm still on my way home from work because public transport is in chaos. Wearing my Birks and another summer dress today (the Boden Lizzie dress). It was murder at work. It was 30 degrees Celsius in my office and at the service desk inside the library we had 34. And there are still people spending their time inside, reading and working. They're crazy, if you ask me. I would have been out of there instantly, but I didn't have the option.

This dress might be your shadow style peeping out. Don't you have a floral on white background that you wore to a special event a few years back? And a few floral summer dresses from years past? You can 'toughen up' this dress with a jean jacket when it gets cooler. Much cooler. I've been listening to the news on the radio, and they did a feature on the extreme heat in Europe and how there is little to no A/C. I hope your apartment is comfortable.

Edited to add: I tend to go a little bohemian every summer - adding a piece or two each year.

Astrid, come cool off in Berlin! It’s not as cool as the coasts, but not as hot as you describe either. Tonight after dark we got some of those rental electric scooters & zipped up to Alex. There was a foreign food festival going on, which of course is silly in Berlin—there was nothing we can’t get any day of the week already. But we hung out and enjoyed the atmosphere, then scootered back home. A completely pointless, goofy, fun evening, and we felt like we were 5 years old on the scooters, with the breeze flowing past us.

Thanks Runcarla. I don't have the dress anymore, but I know which one you're talking about! Agree that this would feel more like me with a jean jacket over it. I'll definitely do that once it has cooled down (a lot). My apartment is better than work, I've kept all windows and curtains closed so it hasn't heated up so much inside. I've only opened the windows for a short time in the morning to get at least a little fresh air...

FashIntern, that sounds so lovely! I really need to pay a visit soon. Maybe I can do a long weekend away, I'm not allowed more than one day off at a time for the first six months.

That dress! Gorgeous on you.
I think your hair and the more streamlined, unfussy accessories do a LOT to temper the “pretty.” Think about what the dress looks like with those terrific neutral oxfords and a watch and your pixie, vs. if you had long curls worn down, ballet flats, and a statement necklace. This still looks like “you.”
