Finally tried this formula and I think it works. Well, enough so that I left the house in it! Just getting my car repaired & doing some errands.

Sweater was a cheapie from F21 -- I thought I'd try out the trend with a budget-friendly piece. Blouse from Madewell, booties from Asos, and AG Nikki jeans. I started with a grey-metallic blouse but really wanted a touch of bright color to lighten up the grey weather today.

Added a pic with outerwear -- it's rainy, so I wore the Burberry trench. For some reason the color in the pic looks blue but it's really teal. The black quilted Calvin Klein bag has been a workhorse!

Janet, I really like this and am glad you posted. I've been thinking of getting a cropped sweater so the more examples I can see it helps me make my decision.

Elegant Chelsea boots, love the gray! The blue trench is super as well, and with the bright collar showing at the top, you're very Carnaby Street. Nice!

Thanks, all! I think it may take a little trial and error to get the proportions right with the cropped sweater and shirt underneath (I tried one shirt that just seemed too short, but this and one other one looked really good to my eye), but I'm pretty convinced that this is an easier look to do than it might appear at first.

High happiness factor today. I always enjoy wearing these booties, even though one of the little studs has gone missing -- no one but me probably notices. I get complliments on this trench every time I wear it, and today was no exception -- a lady in Chipotle loved it.

You know, many (most!) things in fashion are some version of something that's been around a dozen times before, but this cropped-top-over-button-front-shirt is something I don't remember ever seeing before and it looks so fresh and fun to my eye!
