WIW - Buttoned up with Pops of Color

I had a business lunch today, so I wanted to look a bit older, powerful, but still approachable. I really wish the hem of this blue shirt were longer, so that it would stick out of the stripe top more. As it was, it sticks out less than an inch, which looks funny, so I tucked it in.
I like this outfit, I really do. But not as much as my previous dress/cardi/bootie outfit. http://bit.ly/TI8tG3 I can't really put my finger on why, and I'm hoping you ladies can chime in with your thoughts. I don't necessarily think it is anything in the components, just less in tune with how I picture my personal style. Hmmmm.

1&2. New black wide leg trousers, blue 3/4 sleeve button up, black/grey knit top with lace trim, and red patent pumps.

I like this outfit, too, and it looks good on you.

Both are fairly minimal, clean lined, modern classic (to my eye).

This one is a bit masculine (which I happen to like, so that is not a criticism).

The other one was more feminine, dressy, and figure flattering in the extreme. (This one is not Unflattering, but the other one was brilliant.)

Also, the other one was simpler in terms of colours...this one has more going on.

That top is fantastic! I really like this outfit but, like you, prefer your dress/booties ensemble. Perhaps it is that this outfit is more androgynous, and the other was more feminine?

Suz and Emily, ordinarily I wouldn't consider myself team Dressy OR team Feminine. So odd that the look we all like better had those qualities! I think today I felt very buttoned up and formal, while in the dress I felt a bit edgy. Hmmm.

I really like your cuff bracelet (or is that a watch?) with this outfit. It does communicate that image of power you were looking for.

Funny, the whole outfit is reading brown on my monitor. I am glad to read that it was actually black.

JR - that is my big white watch. I wear it way too often, and should look into buying some different watches, because I always wear this one. Weird that it shows brown on your monitor! I don't think I actually own anything brown.

i wonder if the reason you feel it doesn't reflect your personal style as much as the dress/cardi outfit is because of the button down.... maybe you don't think of yourself as a "buttoned down" person. i hope that makes sense. i know that i tend to wear knits, and when i wear a button down i feel less like myself.
