WIW - black, denim and tan (and a hem length question)

Sorry for the awkward pose, the others were out of focus and I only realised after I had already put the camera away.

This is one of those outfits that looks a lot better in motion. The dress falls really nice and swings walking around. This was a too long maxi dress that I had shortened. Instead of playing it safe and shortening it to the knee I went for a true midi length. I like it, while walking. Not so much standing still. But I still enjoy the outfit as a whole!

Would you keep the length? Or should I have the hem taken up a bit? I also own this dress in a striped version and it’s the same length. I do think it would be more flattering a tad shorter.

I was expecting one of these, lol.

I used to love big skirts that length. These days I find they look dowdy on me. We'll see if losing the final 20 lb changes that for me. But as for you--rock on with your bad self & your big skirt! I like the length on you, and the way the funky stockings peek out--lurking quirk.

Thanks! It think it does look a bit dowdy actually, but sometimes I don’t mind. The patterned hose makes all the difference though! I prefer this to wearing it with bare legs and Birks (although that is very comfortable).

I think the length kind of suits your look with the new watch that matches your shoes, the quirky tights... it looks just like you somehow.
I do find, on me, that with my flat or very low heeled shoes then a slightly shorter hemline seems better proportionately. Just below the knee is my best. That short would probably lose you something here though, in the whole “look”.

Chiming in with Jenni's first sentence. My experience with long skirts is useless and irrelevant - but this works really nicely for you !

I don’t see dowdy. I see fun. If you wanted to lengthen the look a bit, You could wear darker toned flats, but there is no need. I do love those shoes!

Thank you both. I agree that just below the knee is the most flattering length, but it would also detract from the look, you’re right. And it feels nice.

Love the shoes and stockings and the length of the skirt is part of the whole look to my eye.

I think this is a classic look, Astrid. The skirt length is in the midi range (not maxi) and is fine 'as is'. It would look particularly summer like with bare legs and a birkie type of sandal.

Thank you, Sally! It's definitely a good cut and it's very comfortable. It's great for travel too. I actually ordered another one in a pattern just now, not sure yet what length I should go for.

Thanks Carla! I've been wearing it with bare legs, my Birks and without a cami underneath quite often, but it's not a look for work (I feel the neckline is too deep for that).

I think a smidgen shorter - but nowhere near the knee. I think long is great and we’re just talking perfection.

Rachylou, yes I would definitely take it up just a tad. I think I’ll go a bit shorter with the new dress and then see how it works out and whether another alteration is worth it for this one.

Thank you, Angie! I’m probably going to keep this as it is. I think I might go shorter on the other dress which is one I only wear with bare legs because it’s lighter colored and screams summer. I think that might be nicer with a bit more leg visible...

Yes, let's.

This is the Wrap Maxi dress from Lands End. I haven't bought anything else there for ages, but the dresses are awesome. And they usually have quite steep sales and special offers, I bought my dresses for a fraction of the original price. They run big though, mine are XS, I'm usually an S or M depending on brand. The fabric is really nice, it's not heavy but substantial enough. They have the dresses each season, and always in different colors and patterns:

At most, I would hem this .5" to 1" which doesn't seem worth it. To me, below the knee would look dowdy (which is my image of how LE tends to look on me). The length you have looks edgy. Also, shorter would make the dress look wider and might throw off the proportions.

Your shoes look like such fun!

I wouldn't change this dress length at all. You have made a unique look with these shoes and tights and it works beautifully. Wear with confidence!
