I dunno if this can be considered "current" but for some reason, I felt like wearing these old pieces today.

The sleeveless black sweater is from
H&M at least 7-8 years ago. The skirt is WDNY from Macy's also at least that long ago. The skirt is really sentimental to me because my mom bought it for me while we were shopping together. I doubt I'll ever get rid of it, even though my style has moved away from such overtly boho pieces. Hopefully the streamlined sandals, top and jewelry nudge this into a bit more sophisticated, yet easy, style. It's a comfortable outfit for a hot day. Sandals are Cole Haan.

Comments & suggestions welcome! Especially any suggestions for styling this old but still loved skirt. It's a bit big on me, so it sits low on my waist -- I've thought about taking it in so it fits better, but I usually just wear a long fitted top like this to counteract all that volume.

I've not read beyond the first line. And after seeing the photos, I really couldn't care less whether it's current or not. You look stunning. The pieces are great, you shine in them. Gorgeous.

Putting on this outfit and stepping out the door in it got me thinking about how caught up I can get in worrying that something looks "current." When the reality is that I just don't want to look "dated" or "old." Even though these pieces are far from new, they don't feel dated or old to me, so I went with it. I suspect I'll be musing more -- perhaps in a new thread -- on the "current" issue. But now I need to get back to work.

Personally, I never described myself as trendy for myriad of reasons. I do come here for education on what's modern take on things I like, but I draw so much joy from something I feel strongly about when I wear it (this includes sentimental pieces like your skirt), or when I suddenly see my existing pieces in a new light, that I don't feel left out just because I'm not incorporating trends.

A few years ago I heard one of the best statements. It came from Imelda May whose style, and personality, I adore. When interviewed about her album the reporter also made a comment about her fabulous retro look being very fashionable. He said "You tapped into trends very well" to what she answered "The trends tapped into me. This is what I've always looked like." That's been at the back of my mind ever since. I love the idea of looking certain way and trends being just something that intersect with that look occasionally.

These boho skirts are timeless in my world anyway.... I love this one and the way you've styled it with the longer more fitted top and the flat sandals...
I think you have really hit the right note with the idea not being so much about being current, but the balance of not dressing 'old'. There is no sign of that description in your style, so rest assured you are succeeding in that goal!

This is boho done right! One of my words is artsy, which is just this side of boho, cause I feel like I can't quite pull off boho without looking costumey and overdone. I love how you've done this simply, with the plain tank taming down the skirt. Great!

And the other thread, yes let's talk. I think my very first post on YLF was whether something was dated if it just wasn't in style, and how to tell the difference between dated and non-trendy. A year and few later, I still can't figure that out!

Janet, you look FABULOUS in this outfit! Bonus that it's sentimental as well. The silhouette, the colour, the print really works well with you. I haven't seen you in anything boho before but somehow this outfit just seems so harmonious on you.

With regards to your concern about being "current" or "dated" - that's in the back of my head all the time. I'm a dress-lover, so I'm always concerned whether I border the line of "matronly" with regards to the prints and cuts I wear. I'm also a fan of long over lean and in the sea of boyfriend jeans (not a trend I'm crazy about despite trying really hard - sorry FABBERS!) I feel so outdated in my voluminous tunics and skinny tall-boot-clad looks.

You mentioned you want to start a thread about "current-ness". PLEASE DO! I would really love to read what other's perspective is about this!

I think it looks great! Everything else is simple and sleek, so I think that's why it works so well, sleek tank, necklace, sandals. I love how your blue nails tie into the skirt colours! It looks cool and breezy to me. Good thoughts here on current-ness....

For the record, when I was in Nordies last weekend, the SA handed me a long black flowy skirt very similar to yours to try on. She said they were literally flying out the door due to comfort and the cool-factor (this was in Vegas). It was uber über comfy but for me in Vancouver not really something I need (it would just get wet

I think boho has taken enough of a hold that it is pretty timeless nowadays. Pairing it with a minimal top and simple accessories keeps it in step with your current style. I am highly impressed that you 1) have stuff from 8 years ago that fits, and 2) that you made it look totally now.

Boho, breezy, and cool! I see the same as many, that this is a classic boho look. The skirt is really lovely, and so is the sentiment behind it. I quite like the styling here, especially the metallic sandals.
