Yesterday DH and were invited for an afternoon of cards (bridge) with friends. They keep their house cool and it was a rainy, cold day. I layered up with cami, sweater, and jacket over my newer wide leg jeans - which I wore full length.

I feel like there is something ‘off’ with the styling. I like the look of the pointed toe flats, but I’m not sure about the sweater and/or blazer jacket. My thought was that a turtleneck would elongate my upper half and balance the long line of the high waisted full length pants. I’m not sure if that was achieved? or, maybe the proportions of the jacket are wrong? It’s a more fitted piece and it seems slouchy and oversized is ‘in’?.

What I notice about your inspo photos is that there is more value contrast than there is in your outfit -- the light wash jeans to contrast with the dark top in 4, and the white/cream tops in 5-6. I feel like the value contrast breaks up the volume a bit. But your outfit is all dark -- maybe that is making it feel too visually "heavy"?

I love the proportions but I think the dark neutrals all together are coming across a bit dull - so agree with Sarah basically.

To add, it might be a bit of seasonal fatigue with winter colour combos too. Like maybe this will feel fresh again in December, vs a lighter base layer for spring.

Yes I agree with SarahD8 that its likely just the contrast levels that are making your outfit feel a bit off to you. Your outfit is all dark tones while your inspirations have a dark/light contrast with the top and jeans.

Count me as the fourth in the tones being too much of a sameness. At first I thought I wasn't crazy about the blazer, but I think it's what wiser minds than me have noticed. I would Try a shorter blazer in a lighter tone.

I wonder if a lighter-coloured top would create more contrast and achieve the look in the inspirational pictures.

I love how this turtleneck looks with jeans. To me, #3 is perfect. As for the blazer, I don’t think colors of the blazer and the denim work well.

I would like to see a light Uniqlo puffer over it or a trench (sorry, don’t remember if you have one).

I like Irina's idea. Your light-coloured puffer or lilac trench would work, but then they aren't blazers.

My two cents is that, first, I think this is a gorgeous outfit on you! I think it looks fab. In terms of the silhouette and the inspiration pics, it seems to me that your outfit is less slouchy overall: The jacket is more fitted (as you note) compared to the inspiration pics, the turtleneck is slim-fitting too, and the jeans are wide-legs, but not very slouchy (i.e., no dropped crotch, like #5). So, overall, to my eye your look is more classic, if that makes sense? It also seems less spring-y than maybe you were after, because of the dark tones.

The other thing I noticed was that your top comes past the belt loops in the first two photos - if you want to keep the darker colours, then maybe adding a belt would help? Like in photo #4.

In your outfit inspo looks, they tucked their tops with the blazers, like you did in #3, pics #1 and #2 your top isn't tucked, as Zaeobi says. I think that would help, also maybe adding a belt, maybe in a lighter colour.

I love the wide legs on you! And the outfit, as Jonesy says, is simply more classic than the inspo pics. Not a bad thing -- just a different look!

For myself -- I also go more classic than the inspo photos when I wear wide legs -- because that's me.

And since I am shorter, I rarely wear a regular length blazer with my high waisted wide legs, but to make the proportions work better for my own, I instead go for a shorter jacket. To get the movement I crave, I also, as others have pointed out, tend in add more value contrast. And if not more value contrast between top and bottom, I tend to add more colour or a scarf. But this is just my own style signature coming out -- I think there are other good ways to get the look that works best for you!

It's a great outfit! Honestly, if you hadn't pointed out that it felt "off," I wouldn't have looked at the details. I think the jackets in the inspo pictures are just slightly longer, giving a more relaxed vibe. Also, while the more delicate pointy-toed shoes seem to work with the wide-legged pants, I find that a hard to pull off IRL, and usually go with a shoe with a bit more visual weight.

You look great but I would try tucking in the top with the blazer on also. A long leg line is not a bad thing .

Maybe more contrast such as lighter wash jeans or jacket. A shorter jacket would also look different. I like the turtleneck and your shoes and everything in #3.

I like it- and I like the proportions. I would experiment with a few tweaks - coloured shoes or sneakers maybe or swapping out the turtleneck and see if you prefer it.

But I like it as is - nice modern look.
