My calendar says today is the first day of winter. It’s also the shortest day of the year. I was anxious to get my chores done and go out for a walk. We’ve had a week of above freezing temps, so the snow has pulled back and compressed - leaving roads and sidewalks dry. However it was below freezing (-4degC) today with a strong, bitter wind, and I chose loose clothes that would fit over thermal under-layers.and wool - whenever it was an option!

DH and I walked the trail that followed the Ganaraska River to Lake Ontario, stopped for coffee and a treat, then home the way we came. I didn’t take any photos, but was inspired to compose some Haiku to celebrate the Solstice.

Cold earth grey and brown,
Snow in shadows hides,
Chased by the winter sun

Geese fly in a wedge,
Heading to the lake,
Will they find water or ice?
