Winter Weather Styling - YouLookFab Forum

I promised myself in 2025 that I'd be doing less buying and more styling. So shopping my closet, I tried my best to crank things up a notch, as winter dressing can be a bit of a slog for me.

Here's what I wore heading for a meal out. The outfit started with some good ole traction winter hiker boots for practical purposes as I managed to somehow injure my knee last weekend. Trying to add some pizazz to my white knit sweater and Levi's 90s dad jeans combo, I chose a cropped speckled-textured waterfall knit vest and a taupe belt. My touch of whimsy was a little gnome leather pendant I bought at an artisan shop decades ago.

I could have worn a functional puffer, but since we were driving, I opted for something less typical and went with a thrifted cranberry red wool peacoat that I got a few years back. I added a black/white pattern knit scarf and finished with a black wool toque (such a Canadian word, eh?)

The outfit without the coat is totally cute. The vest makes it for me. The pendant also adds that extra something. With the coat, which is s gorgeous colour on you btw, takes it to polished. Practical and polished in winter - what better? Winter is my most boring season for style. Nothing of interest to talk about.

I really like the line of the loose jeans with the peacoat. There's an overall sailor look that is really appealing. The contrast of the scarf against the coat is the final touch. Very sharp!

Great job— I like the vest and love, love the pea coat! Can’t see the pendant too well but love the idea. Dressing around snow boots is such a challenge.

Angie- Appreciate your lovely feedback, glad you like these winter hiking boots, apparently one can injure their knee just bending down getting veggies from the fridge.
Thanks Star, I’ve had this particular vest for years and it really helps to spruce up a lot of my winter outfits. I agree that winter dressing isn’t as simple as the summer but I can’t picture you with boring style no matter the season.
Roberta, I like the point you make about the loose jeans with the peacoat. A peacoat is pretty darn classic, and I would agree that the looser fit of these jeans seems to help make this style of coat feel a bit more modern to me.

That’s one of the better winter scarves I’ve seen out and about. The navy ties with your jeans and tuque, and the blue and white is fab with the red coat. Winning winter look, Dee!

For me, winter dressing is all about being warm. Even inside I wear thermals under regular clothes. I mostly wear lightweight turtleneck sweaters and jeans. Sometimes a flannel button down shirt. When it’s really cold, I break out the wool. I have 3 winter coats. The burgundy puffer and wool check get the most wears. The grey long coat is for over skirt and dress outfits or for dressier occasions. I’ve worn it twice so far this winter. I’m wondering if the long grey coat will be my last formal style coat?

Great layering! The boots are fab, love when function and fashion come together
and a red pea coat instead of basic navy or black, nice! And don’t think it went unnoticed that your phone cover matches your coat!

Thanks Cookie, yes, some winter boots aren’t too style friendly when they’re more functional, but I guess these ones are okay. Glad you like the peacoat, I loved it when I first spotted it at the thrift store.
Runcarla - I guess your moniter is reading the colours differently, The jeans are actually charcoal, scarf is black and white. I haven’t had a long formal coat in years and staying warm is paramount to me as well. Puffers are the mainstay of my winter outerwear. This peacoat is the only deviation from them.
Kkards- Glad you like the boots too, and finding this peacoat in cranberry was a happy score for me and haha, it matches my cellphone cover too.

Dee, I think you look great! Of course I am biased in favour of that gorgeous coat and am glad you got to wear it. The colour is beautiful on you. I like the textured vest, as well. You look cozy and (I hope!) safe in the boots. They'd have worked perfectly for my haute hiking plaid outfit! I hope your knee improves soon.

And my late Papa broke a rib bending down to pick up one of our Yorkies years ago. Our bodies can be as vulnerable as they are robust and strong.

Oh my Angie, your poor father. My knee is getting better, but I will be treading a little more carefully these days.

Did you take off the scarf (as well as coat) on arrival? I’m thinking you could play around with wearing the scarf and vest together. Could make an interesting pattern mix.

I love winter dressing but my winter is SO mild compared to yours. We don’t get negative temperatures.

I usually wear at least one non-neutral item in every outfit and find this particularly important in winter. I would love to get a winter coat in a versatile non-neutral.

Lately, I have added these colour pops to my winter wardrobe:
• Cranberry opaque tights
• Cobalt soft warm scarf that can be
used indoors as well as outdoors
• Teal cardigan
• Cobalt fleece jacket
• Checked warm scarf in blue, red and
several other colours, mainly used
outdoors
• Cobalt warm hat

Fantastic look! I think the boots look great and add to the outfit. The vest is great and I am sure I would love the gnome if I could see it . Winter here is more like many people's spring, but luckily I run cold and still am able to wear my coats and jackets.

This is a perfect outfit for a cold winter day. The red jacket adds a nice touch of color. The white sweater has a lot of visual interest because of the texture. Fun pendent necklace too!

We've had a couple of weeks of cold days and I am trying to wear as many of my sweaters and scarves that I can before it becomes mild. A sweater, scarf, jeans, and boots was a combination I wore for many years when I lived in areas with cold winters. It's easy and warm.

You look great Dee. It’s summer here so I am a bit same-same on days off- often a singlet ( tank to you?) and shorts. In winter I wear a skivvy (mock neck) under knitwear most days. Sorry about your knee.
I love the peacoat and the scarf especially. Gorgeous red on you.

Brooklyn- Love how you can see other styling possibilities, I don’t tend to wear scarves on their own much, usually just when I’m wearing outerwear, mostly for their warmth factor, although they can make a nice style statement too.
The Cat- I agree, I love adding a little something in a bright, bold colour especially in winter. Helps to lift the spirits.
Jamie- Haha, I love this cute little gnome pendant. Yeah, its hard to see him, but he’s there.
