WIMW....If I'm Brave!

Today, I am planning to wear this outfit to teach middle school students in a project I coordinate to address bullying of students with disabilities.

It just so happens that the topic is being "Brave" and standing up for those who are bullied. We are watching the Sara Bareilles' music video of her song Brave and then doing a fun activity.

So, all that to say....I am going to be Brave and wear something out of my comfort zone: Old Navy cropped boyfriends, Mephisto sandals, and a sort of tucked shirt with a BELT....whew, that's a lot of new for an old dog!

Will I look OK....especially to 12, 13, and 14 year olds? Please be honest! There is still time to chicken out!

The outfit looks great!

But I have a concern about the subject. In my experience with Middle Schoolers, they are actually quite kind regarding true disabilities. Someone in big need, they understand.

Where they are terribly cruel is to those who are just a little bit different. The girl who is chubby. The boy who is slightly feminine. The student not wearing the current trends. The girl who is not in their clique because her hair isn't right. And the problem is, they don't define this as bullying. They just think they are being so cool and funny. I hope you will address this as real bullying, and that standing up against this is what is truly Brave. Standing up for someone who is actually handicapped isn't nearly as difficult in their world.

Good heavens. You look terrific! With that build-up, I was expecting something crazy. Instead, you look comfortable, put together, stylish and relaxed.

Pearl...good points! But it is a peer advocacy project to address bullying of students with disabilities through social inclusion. My daughter Grace (Down syndrome) isn't bullied per SE, but is often excluded from social activities. Peers are matched with students with disabilities to develop relationships and really show how we are more alike than different. This spills over to all the student body. It's just one piece of the puzzle to address the global issues you mentioned. We talk about disability labels, people first language, social activities, and do service projects together. Just wanted to give you a glimpse into our wonderful program called PAVE....Peer Advocates' Voices Empower.

Seems great. I also educate kids, about personal and internet safety, abduction prevention etc. It is very rewarding to hear about kids who knew what to do in threatening situations, like bullying. My group covers cyber bullying in particular.
