Wildfang shorts set

When Angie spotlighted Wildfang, I was drawn to the navy pinstripe shorts and top, which reminded me of drapey rayon shorts sets that I wore and loved in the 90s. (It was probably an 80s trend that I adopted very late. ha!) I started with size S and then ordered XS to compare. The second set finally arrived, so I took photos to give myself another perspective beyond the mirror, and thought I would share them with you.

Not sure whether I will keep, but I am leaning toward yes, on the XS, because I like how the outfit feels. However, I will admit I am less than enamored with how the outfit looks in the photos. I think it looks better in the mirror. (My mirror may be a slenderizing one! Only half kidding; I think mirror distortion may be the rule rather than the exception.)

Here is the outfit in two sizes, plus some variations I tried:

1-3: size S

4-12: size XS, with different tops, toppers and footwear.

Bonus pics 13-14: what I wore today. Wide cuff jeans (Pilcro); white, taupe, blush, red, and navy striped open-knit pullover (Nic & Zoe); leopard mules (Naot); white jean jacket (Banana Republic); blush crossbody bag (Nordstrom).

I appreciate any thoughts you'd like to share.

Definitely the XS, I'd say.

Looks great with the white and navy toppers in 7 & 11. I think the longer cardigan is too long though, with shorts.

Maybe try tucking the shirt into the jeans?

I think I like the smaller size better with one concern of washing ( hand wash cold and such would be ideal ). The outfits look great - love #7, 8 and 10 but all work so well!
Your last pic for today outfit is fab - lovely soft colors and textures!

It reminds me of something I had in the 80s! I like the smaller size better too. I like it semi tucked in #5, and I like the shorts better than the shirt — the combos with the shorts and other tops look really good. I also love #7, breaking up that stripe with the white jacket.

Great cuff on your jeans in your WIW! Pilcro often works really well for me, and I’d be tempted by those, but that super high rise is not my friend. They do look great on you!

Don’t you wish they’d come up with a size chart and stick with it? All the scrambling I’ve done between different jeans sizes makes me dizzy.

Janet, I appreciate your thoughts. These Pilcro jeans are two or three years old, and they aren't especially high rise, compared to what's available now. They are a good "high" rise for me, though. I'm thinking I might wear the top with white jeans. or white denim shorts.

Thanks, FashIntern. Yes, I hear you on sizing. I went by the size chart, and figured the S would be perfect. And I even thought it might be too small, given that this line is sold in Nordstrom's junior department. That's partly why I thought I'd share the photos, in case anyone else is considering them.

I really like this on you- definitely keep the xs. Love it with the white denim jacket, but I think it works all these ways.

The XS shorts are much better fitting, I think. I wonder if the S top would give you more room in the shoulder? Can you mix the sizes? I LOVE the outfit styled with the toppers. And all the other mixes look great to me as well. I feel like your style has a lot of similarities to my own!

Jenava, that's a thought. These are separates. I will revisit the top sizes. I don't feel the XS is small in the shoulder, but it does pull open ever so slightly below the bottom button, when untucked, whereas the S doesn't. It's not like the shirt is actually pulling on my hips, but it doesn't fall straight down at the center the way the S does. And funny thing: I'm so used to taking a size larger in bottoms that I didn't even think about keeping the larger top and smaller shorts!

As for shorts set, not a fan, sorry. I have to admit, I rarely like shorts outfits, so it’s just me. Somehow, doesn’t look as sophisticated and creative like you other outfits. But maybe you are in need of shorts, then absolutely, go for it.

Irina, I appreciate your thoughts. It doesn't feel sophisticated to me, either. I don't wear shorts that often, but I think I would wear these during those brief periods when we have the weather for it. I was also thinking of them as possible travel shorts for summer trips. But I do have doubts.

I had a polished cotton shorts set in the 80s in Houston. In the summer it was my going out outfit! I like shorts and am wearing shorts right now. Again, if you don’t like my legs DON’T LOOK AT THEM!

You look great in these shorts. Get whichever size is comfortable.

Ooh, love this on you! I like it as a set and with all of the different tops (especially white) and toppers. What versatile pieces! I can't really tell much different in size--they both look good to me. Do you find them true to size?

XS and keep! My favorite stylings are the entire set in XS, although I do prefer the tucked in version (so 5 over 4). I like them with white but also #8 is great. You look terrific in your WIW too and those jeans are excellent. And, finally, the mirror distortion question is real. I am never sure my favorite photos comes down to camera angle, mirror distortion, or my mood to be honest.

Hah, Janet! I'll wear shorts, yes. I am less self-conscious about my legs than I was a few years ago--getting "over it."

There was a forum member, Elisabeth, who had great style and great shorts style as well. And she did what I thought of as sophisticated shorts looks. I bought these more for sentimental reasons, and didn't really expect sophistication with this outfit. But I think I can make it work, and try to push the shorts in a more sophisticated direction with different tops and footwear.

Ok, I am echoing several others, but I love this on you -- especially in XS. I like it as a whole outfit (tucked) and I also really love the shorts with the tops in 8 and 9. Like Janet, I tend to like to break up outfits like this for some reason, but -- I say that, and then remember that I love wearing my two piece dresses as sets, so there you go.

Your WIW is fabulous, too. Whites are brilliant on you with your hair and specs. And the pink bag is a lovely touch.

I think XS (esp for the shorts). I do think tucking is needed when the pieces are worn together, and elevated accessories (which you have done). To be a spanner - would you wear them together often or could you get a different top to go with these shorts (which are a great fit) - or wear with your existing tops.

Love todays WIW. Colours, shapes, accessories, fit - a total winner.

Definitely XS. Especially love the set broken up and worn with other pieces. The shorts with the black and white tops are adorable; and I really like the full outfit with both the white denim jacket and the short navy cardi.

You are “less self-conscious” about your legs? What??? There is no need to be self-conscious about them at all—you’ve got great legs!
On breaking up sets—I’m finding that I really like the top from two of mine, but with the third, whenever I wear just one piece, it feels like I’m compromising. But those shorts are so cute, I think 8 here is great, but wonder how much you’ll drift that way.

Another vote for the smaller size. You’ve styled the two piece romper like a pro! WELL DONE. The versions with the varying toppers are particularly creative and fab. Love #7, 10 and 11.

KILLER jeans look. Soft, pretty, on trend, interesting, and great for Seattle. The light palette is gorgeous with your hair!

I really like this and agree on the xs sizing. I was looking through the photos thinking I hope Firecracker tries the shorts with a solid top also and voila there it was. My faves are 8 and 9.
I’m wearing shorts again this year too. I had given them up for several years but am again comfortable in them.

I am in total agreement with Irina here. The smaller size fits well, you've styled them nicely, but somehow I don't see this look as quite you. Obviously there is merit in stretching one's boundaries , and if this is it - then as Irina said, go for it!

Suz, thanks for your thoughts. I could see you wearing an outfit like this, actually, and maybe it's because of your two-piece dress looks. Also the navy and stripes, perhaps. Anyway, to your point, and Kate's and Sal's and others', these pieces are easier to wear separately in ways that feel more in line with what I usually wear. Generally I am a separates dresser; rarely do I wear a one-piece outfit or a matched set of anything. I appreciate your comment and Angie's about the WIW and how it works with my hair. I am finding whites easier to wear these days with my silver-white hair becoming more prominent.

Angie, thank you. The flashback factor is the main appeal for me. It's good to hear the love for the jeans here, too. I actually thought about culling this pair earlier this season. What was I thinking?

Ha! FashIntern, I appreciate your compliment. In truth, I always liked my legs, from very early on. Then I became self-conscious about them when spider veins appeared on them. Now I'm kind of over it and okay with baring them again. That top in 8 is tricky for me to style, but I'm glad it works with the shorts.

Lisa, I'm glad you chimed in. I appreciate your discerning eye. Objectively, I think this outfit is not only outside the box for me, but it is also, as an overall look, not even leaning in a direction I really want to go. And yet, there are elements that I like and I think I will enjoy wearing it (and the pieces) in different ways. Maybe just for this season.

Ok, hmm. So I believe this would be very wearable and useful, and it looks nice… but there *is* something about it, about the style, that I find a little discordant. I feel it’s… maybe supposed to be relaxed but really, it’s formal. I think when worn as a set, I really like it with the toppers because you can push up the sleeves and add a little louche-ness back in. Lol, I’d keep and maybe slouch a little bit, lol
