WIB: Q1 2022 (and Summer Planning)

Not a lot of purchases so far this year. Just the three pieces below (and in Finds):

exact replacement for my favorite silk blouse, secondhand (essential)
short sleeve velvet tee, perfect for SoCal winters (statement)
easy printed jersey dress (statement)

plus, a pair of straight-leg jeans, still on order (essential)

I'm starting to think about summer now--our long, looooong dominant season, summer. I think my essentials are in decent shape, with a few exceptions. My jumpsuit is starting to look a bit worse for wear after more than a hundred outings. I could use an easy woven tee, similar to the velvet one, but in cotton or linen. And finally, I think our weather just requires an annual pair of sandals, to keep several in rotation.

Other than that, I'm just...not feeling super inspired. My inspiration board is much stronger on cool weather than hot. Maybe a breezy black tiered dress? Something embroidered and kaftan-y? Or something bold and patterned? What will feel inspiring when it's 94° (ie: next week)?

Had to boot up the weather app. Dang, y’all really headed for the 90s. Have to say I feel energised by the bold amd patterned. Esp for spring.

Embroidered or bold and patterned - like both of them.
Was checking the weather for next 10 days - 90 degrees sounds alarming ( brain melting for some people = late noise and parties ;-( ).
Annual pair of sandals is a must in sunny CA.

I agree that a new pair of sandals is a must for your climate. I love your ideas. Yes to breezy dresses. How about some skirts? And handkerchief linen toppers. I bought one on consignment today that I did not love but had an elastic waist and had lots of summer colors in it that I have in summer tops…coral, orange, yellow, black, white, and red.

Three fabulous wardrobe additions in your perfect colour palette. Wearing boho lite is practical in a hot climate and there are some gorgeous items available. I often look at Johnny Was collections online for inspiration and came upon this dress that reminded me of you.

I appreciate the reminder that my long, chilly spring really isn’t all that bad.

Your purchases so far look just right for you. I’m still impressed at how you can reason this out, as opposed to my method of “oooh, shiny!” & later figuring out reasons it works in my wardrobe (ie, boots in my newspaper outfit).

Does the embroidery tradition of Central America & Mexico extend as far north as LA? You’d have to decide if you’d be comfortable in a huipil, but there certainly are other garments that showcase that stitching, and you could probably buy (nearly) direct from the producer. I think those intense colors would go well with your black, and play into your rock star vibe. The Pinterest page has a lot more color than your finds and pix.

Paired with sandals, a breezy tiered dress gets my vote for hot summer days. They’re easy, and maybe you can find some edgy sandals. I think this would complement the items you already own, and be a little different from your cold weather capsule.

Nice find with the silk shirt! Agreed that sandals need an annual replenish - mine are still going strong but I'm eyeing up a new pair in preparation (today is unusually cold at 14C, but we'll soon be up there with you lol).

For warm weather, I find loose pieces with structure at key points to work best in not feeling overwhelmed but still breezy. Your key points might be different to mine (the shoulders & waist) but wide legged trousers might be a good starting point?

It's snowing in some of Europe at the moment - Spring is SO unpredictable....

How about a patterned dress with an earthy background? Your signature cinnamon.

How you could wear one pair of sandals for days, weeks, or even months on end? My feet need variety. Please treat yourself to another pair of sandals.

The velvet top looks so you. And I really love the embroidered dress, although the sun dress might feel better in the 90s. Last week we got up to 81F, twenty degrees above normal. On April 1st they do a snow survey in the Sierra, and it was only a third of normal.

‘Yes’ to another pair of sandals, and I’m with Angie regarding a cinnamon or terracotta dress. Possibly a tiered or broomstick skirt? How to you keep your summer blacks from fading after so many wears? Do you re-dye? I find that the more frequent washing of items worn in hot weather and the strong summer sun, are not conducive to maintaining a saturated black.

After looking at your style board (thanks for sharing) I think an embroidered piece would be such a nice addition. Maybe something you could wear buttoned as a dress or open as a duster.

Opposite problem here, how to feel inspired when it’s still 25f.
Anyway I love the 1st dress you posted, it’s unique and beautiful, but I feel like thr 3rd one could be one of those hidden gems. Look nice in the picture but is a real Wow in person because the cut and detailing are perfect.

Definite yes to new sandals. I am in favour of a new pair every year as well and my summer is much shorter. They wear out faster than other footwear (for me).

I love the idea of a two piece jumpsuit -- or skirt/ top set you could wear as a dress or not.

Yes to sandals.

I vote an earthy coloured dress (patterned or embroidered). Black is always around but sooner or later the earthy colour trend will end. Get some cinnamon or cognac while you can. Maxi or midaxi style. A-line, tiered or wrap.

Yes, Jenn I believe I will be joining you in hot weather this week. My go tos are usually various styles of knee length shorts mixed with blouses plus sandals. Sandals only last if they are frequently rotated so your plan makes sense. I like the idea of linen two piece jumpsuit (like Angie posted). Two piece only because I can't get my head around the one piece bathroom problem. And kaftan/bold prints - there are some great vintage ones on Etsy.

rachylou, 3 days forecast over 90 now! It's insanity.

slim cat, we live behind a bar with a patio, so noisy evenings are a given, but luckily when windows and doors are closed, our house is pretty soundproof!

Joy, I keep going back and forth on skirts, but have generally been falling on the side of preferring an unstructured waist for the heat. I'd love to see your new topper!

Bijou, love that dress! I was browsing Johnny Was this morning, too, and will keep watching them and Farm Rio as true summer collections are released.

Sloper, I haven't had my fill of cool days yet after this dry, warm winter! Today was a lovely Seattle sort of day, though, so that was nice, leading into next week's heat wave.

Stagiaire Fash, we have a fantastic Mexican market here, but I don't think I'd be comfortable, culturally, wearing traditional Mexican/Central American clothing. I do enjoy brands like B. Yellowtail and Farm Rio, which draw authentically on their own heritage.

Staysfit, part of me thinks the tiered dress would be "another black dress," but then, I wear and love my black dresses and stylistically, it is quite different!

Minaminu, I do think it would be nice to have something with some embellishment for when layering is really not an option!

Zaeobi, I would, in fact, like a new pair of wide-leg trousers, but I have some balloon pants that fill a similar role, along with some wide leg jeans. I mostly don't worry about my clothing overwhelming me, as I'm both fairly tall and large.

Angie, I like the idea of a two-piece jumpsuit with some interest! Something about the shape of this particular dress (pic 1) makes me suspect it wouldn't work for me, but I like the idea of it. Something like this Peruvian Connection one is interesting, too

JAileen, I didn't mean to insinuate I only had one pair of sandals! I've bought one pair each of the past three years and they're all in rotation right now, though the first two have 60+ wears each.

We had high hopes for the winter after a wetter than normal December, but then it basically didn't rain at all in January or February. And now it's dry season again.

Runcarla, I've been known to re-dye, especially with cotton, but I don't mind the faded look on silk and linen. It gives it more character.

Lana, the duster option was one of the things that appealed to me about that first dress above, which is from Farm Rio.

kkards, yeah, looking at photos online isn't going to tell me nearly as much as just trying the darn things on! You can make educated guesses, but it's hard telling what will turn out to be a sneaky winner.

Style Fan, I'm looking to add an everyday statement, if that makes sense. A workhorse statement? I don't have a lot of those for summer.

cat2, I'm fond of washable silk for LA too! I have loose pants in my essentials, so I'm good there, although something patterned might be fun.

Jules, sandals just wear out so much faster than boots or oxfords!

Suz, too funny. I just wrote the above to Jules and then read your comment! I think the combination of wearing them barefoot and just their strappy nature makes sandals more delicate than winter shoes.

Brooklyn, love that skirt, and you're right about the colors. Cinnamon is already starting to fade from the meta. Maybe mustard will come back to replace it though. I do love mustard.

Jaime, vintage kaftans sound like a lot of fun! I wonder if this will be the year I buy a pair of shorts.

I like your idea of a black summer dress with embroidery. Would you wear something with sleeves when it's really hot?

chewyspaghetti, I usually just wear a dress when I might otherwise wear shorts. Honestly, I think black with sleeves might be a bit much for summer here...although I am in AC most of the time.

As always well thought out additions and I like your "maybes" too.

A couple of thoughts
- don't feel bad about sandals. Your style is relatively consistent so one pair a year means rotation and variety.
- if black dresses work, then I wouldn't feel compelled to look at other colours, unless you want to.

I am finding that my solid pieces are becoming neutral but patterned pieces are coloured (some bright and some quiet).
