Hello everyone! I stumbled on this website a few days ago, looking for info on cigarette pants. Anyway, I'm 72, mostly retired and spent most of my life in L.A. but currently living in Conyers, GA just southeast of ATL. I graduated from the U. of Wis. with a degree in Theatre where I concentrated in musical theatre and costume design. In my 40’s I went back to school at FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising/L.A.) where I earned a Professional Certificate in Fashion Design, summa cum laude—while working full-time at night in a law firm, while being a single mother! Most of my work life was in the administrative/law field—not something I really enjoyed but it did get my son put through college. As you might guess, “creative fashion” has always been high on my list of interests, along with singing &
dancing—when I was 54 I took up belly dancing & taught and performed
professionally for 10 yrs! Now, no longer in the entertainment mecca of L.A., I spend most of my creativity on drawing, painting, interior design, furniture re-arranging, selling my beaded pillows, art & belly dance costumes in my etsy store (RaqsRags) & my art on several art websites. I’m very petite (4’11”) & have decided that leggings, straight-leg yoga pants & cigarette pants with colorful, unusual booties & tunics are my best look (have good legs!) & I’m busy creating a wardrobe of them, along with recovering some side chairs in fuchsia satin brocade (& having also just finished a slipcover for a wing chair & ottoman in a style similar to McKenzie-Childs--as you can see I'm not averse to color & pattern). Oh, & in my free time I work 10 hrs/wk at JoAnn Fabrics, cutting fabric & advising sewers. I have one son who moved back to L.A. last yr (hoping to join him there soon) & one grandson who also went to live with his dad there, so I’m kind of alone right now & look to the internet for support/friendship.

Hello Everyone, I'm Elle.

I don't know how I'm only *just* joining this because I got heavily into fashion about 10 years ago, at 25.

I devour art in the form of sculpture, interior design (mainly furniture & structure), architecture, fashion design. I study fashion in my free time and am working towards a graduate certificate in Luxury Brand Management. As a reformed compulsive shopper, I am so intrigued by the psychology of consumerism.

That said, my formal education is firmly in business, while the majority of my side-educational-pursuits (certificates, etc) are in health studies (nutrition & life/relationship coaching).
I work in a male-dominated workplace and do operations management (& project management mentorship). But I am transitioning to a more people-centric position in 2019.

I focus on self-improvement. Feeling good in the clothes we wear is a part of it (among other things). So personal-fashion wise, I spend a lot of time editing what I have in an effort to only have things I love and that make me feel good.
I try to apply that same screening process to everything in my life.

I look forward to becoming friends with all of you

Hi all,
I was searching for orange... Landed on this blog and have been binge reading it. You guys really seem to have lots of fun and I was tempted to join...
Also becuz I will be moving to Asia... India Delhi to be precise in another couple of month... Husband's job. Shifted in 2009 from London and now shifting again... So I thought this would be a good way to keep in touch.
Do let me know if there are any rules...

Hello Everyone! I :

  • Am a few weeks from 50
  • Just discovered a love of boots & booties. Ahh, the power of a
    stacked heel
  • Am a public librarian. You would think this would be a liability
to my looking fabulous attempts, but there is a new crop of coworkers who
    are into it.
  • Live in a small town outside of Houston, Texas.
  • I can’t stand anything itchy. What’s that about? It eliminates whole
    swathes of beautifully draping fabrics!
  • Have two tops I love but don’t know how to wear and it’s
killing me. Tights? Leggings? Flats? Boots? This conundrum is what led me to YLF to
    seek help.

Thanks, Angie, for your patience, stamina &
determination to give us your insight to help fashion enthusiasts and the
clueless. This platform is truly a labor of love!

Hi!

After years of checking YLF daily, I'm celebrating the new year by joining as a member. I told myself recently this would be the year of joyful action!

I'm 60, and transplanted 3 years ago from Seattle to a small town in South Carolina. At the same time, I morphed from office worker to homemaker. The change in climate and culture as well as daily activities has been enormous, so my wardrobe has been under constant revision as I experiment with who I am and what the heck I'm doing with my life now.

What I do know is I'm an artist, a polished bohemian, and an avid thrift-shopper. Creating an evolving wardrobe and style has long been my happy place, and I'm looking forward to a new level of involvement with this wonderful and inspiring community.

Hi y'all! i just found this place and was a little worried that I might be too old for the group, but I'm encouraged by the other newbies above me.

I'm 55, live and work in Austin, TX. During the Texas legislative sessions I lobby, so I'm over at the Capitol and have to look polished and professional - but I avoid business suits like the plague. We just started a new session so I've been trying to refresh my work wardrobe and sometimes have trouble balancing "professional" with "interesting" and "flattering" and "comfortable." That latter being of far more importance to me than it used to be!

I have two daughters (25 and 19), one of whom is studying fashion business in Italy this year. She used to be my "does this work?" barometer but now I'm having to trust my own judgment a little more. If I can make the time to participate regularly here, maybe you all can help out too!

Hi! I live in Chicago, am in my early 50’s, married with two teenagers, love fashion but am not always very good at it! For years I had a personal shopper, but found it frustrating and too limiting to just shop at one store with one person, so we “broke up”.

My style is urban. I probably dress 10 years younger than my age and find myself frustrated finding decent quality clothing. I still have clothes from before my kids were born (and wear them). I don’t in getting believe in getting rid something you haven’t worn in a year. You will regret getting rid of that 100% cream silk shirt if it is a basic. If it is too small or too big, that’s another story.

I just lost a lot of weight so have been doing a lot of shopping and altering. Thank goodness for a good tailor. This site has been great for identifying some good finds and seems like a terrific community!

Hi! My name’s Bobby and
I’m new to this site. I love all things fashion, lifestyle and wellness – I’d
love to learn more and share the stuff I
know too! Living in London means I’m right in the middle of a busy hub for
trends and healthy lifestyles alike, but it can feel lonely at times. I look
forward to being part of a cool community, helping where I can and finding out all about the things I love!

Hi everyone

Just wanted to introduce myself and say thanks for being here - this seems like a supportive, friendly environment with useful tips and info.

My name is Karen, 42, Brit living in the US (Nevada, so quite a change from London where I used to live in my days as a lawyer!). I love the sunshine here, although adapting to the less fashiony style has been a challenge. I'm just aiming to wear what makes me happy, even if it's not what everyone else is wearing (that said, there are some pretty cool people here!).

I love a more minimalist, edgy style and my icons are Alexa Chung (of course!) and Diane Kruger.

I just launched a fashion blog for women in their forties who still want to look cool and I'm loving hearing from you all and excited to connect more! xx

Hi there, all the beautiful ladies. My name is Mimi.I stumbled upon this forum while searching for some fashion advice.
I would love to make some new friends here.Feel free to ping me

I live in Toronto Canada, married for almost 30 years and have 1 adult son.
I have been checking YLF for years and somehow never noticed the forums!

I have a very physical job, think heaving furniture around, but am in management, so have to look polished. It's a challenge.

I'm also hair obsessed, but that's another story...

Hey ladies, newbie here.. wow such cool forum cant believe i only know of it now love to connect with you all..

Hello. Today I've just discovered this lovely site.

Just found this site looking for a fashion forum online. Love looking a outfit ideas and Pintrest is not doing it for me. Posting here to get to "active member" status so I can see all the pics people are posting.

Hi there, I'm very new here- I found this forum while searching online for information about Anthropologie interviews, and I'm very glad to be here! I loved online forums and met so many great friends on the (now-defunct) iVillage message boards, so I'm feeling quite nostalgic right nonw.

I transitioned to a career in personal styling just about a year ago, and am currently working on starting my own styling business. I worked in a contract role for an online startup company but my contract recently ended. It was a great way to hone my skills and enhance my confidence in my ability to style real woman.

I look forward to learning and chatting here! Hope you all are having a great weekend!

Hi all!

My name is Jess, I am 30 years old and live in New York. I’m married to my wonderful husband, and some of my favorite hobbies are gardening, photography, and being in nature I don’t mind getting my hands dirty and I love animals .
I’m new to the site and still exploring and learning how everything works ☺️. I look forward to learning more about fashion from fellow members and currently I hope to learn more about belting jeans and buying belts in general.

It’s nice to meet all of you!

Hi everyone, I've been a long time Angie YLF follower but never joined the forums. I live about 1/2 way between LA and SF, where it's arid and pretty hot in the summer and moderate in the winter. I work from home for an SF based company. I discovered YLF a few years back when I was really struggling to figure out how to dress my post childbirth body and not completely give up, and following the blog really helped me pull together some looks when I went back to work.

My style is very much a work in progress, trying to balance being practical with the kids, the occasional trip to the office, a date night every now and then with a desire to look a bit more pulled together and polished as I've moved through my 40's.

One wildcard is that I'm also musician performing older musical styles from the 20's-40's and that's really turned me on to vintage clothes. I don't wear them off the stage, but I would if I thought I could pull them off. So I'm a sucker for anything that evokes that era.

I'm looking forward to meeting everyone, when I've read the forum in the past I"ve always been impressed with how supportive and kind everyone here seems to be.

Hi everyone I'm Lindsay.
I'm 36 and newly remarried. I have one child who's 16.
I just got out of a 17 year emotionally abusive relationship, I have high functioning autism and I now own an online jewelry store called The Peach Pie.
I love singing, piano, animals of all kinds and reading.
I've studied animals extensively and that's where I started my career, but sadly developed horrible allergies to the animals I was working with. My heart is still there though.
I've been doing a lot of soul searching and changing in the last year. Within that year I found out I have high functioning autism and finally got away from my abusive ex-husband and moved out on my own with my child.
It's been rough and a bit dizzying but I'm surviving.
I started my jewelry store online because I need to work from home. Having high functioning autism makes working in normal workplace settings with others almost impossible sometimes for me. Just finding out that there is a reason to all the strange things I've experienced growing up has been quite rattling to me. I've kind of had to step back from the world for 6 months to recover enough from that and escaping an abusive relationship, to start to function again.

My new husband and my child and I live a simple life, and we're happy. : )
Nice to meet you all!

I'm a longtime YLF reader and finally joined the forum. I am 31, and I live in West Los Angeles with my husband and 16 month old son. I recently quit my full-time attorney job, and now I freelance to spend more time with my son.

I think I'm still figuring out my style for this season of my life. I used to live in a work uniform of J.Crew pencil skirts and Tippi sweaters, or Banana Republic/J. Crew/Ann Taylor suit pieces. Now, I work from home so all of those pieces are hanging, unused, in my closet and basically live in athletic clothes.

I'm a curvy and athletic size 12 right now (still trying to get down 5 more lbs and one more size to prepregnancy size, but learning to love and be grateful for my body as it is). I have an hourglass shape with a larger bust, sturdy shoulders, and a bigger booty.

I'm into natural fibers and clothes that are practical for my daily life (machine washable, sturdy enough to handle things like sitting on the floor, playing with a busy and active toddler, cooking, cleaning, walks, etc). I went through a long v-neck t-shirt phase, but I'm getting a little bit tired of that look and trying to venture out into something else.

I recently ordered a few tops from Loft (Lou & Grey "Softserve" linen twist front top & a striped sleeveless sweater) and a few things from Gap (a pair of navy linen joggers and a pair of green "rib mix" joggers that were an Angie recommendation earlier this year) to try to elevate my style from my usual jeans+vneck or leggings+tank combination. I want to be more strategic about my purchases to buy things that I really love that will last so that I ultimately have a smaller but more useful collection! Looking forward to learning from all the style mavens here!

I've been checking out this site for the last few months and finally became a member. I love the style finds and advice shared! It's already changed my relationship with new fashion trends. I'm 42 and a professor. It used to be easy to stay on top of styles--I used to read fashion magazines and follow trends--but I have less time to pay attention these days. I look forward to being part of this community!

Hello, everyone! At 47, I have hit mid-life and the beginnings of menopause! Yikes! My body bits have shifted and finding clothes I feel good in is a challenge. I am trying to maximize my fashion dollars by making my purchases count, and love the inspiration I find on this site. I live in a 4-season state, and am looking forward to wearing a few of the new fall trends. Bring on the plaid!

Hi, all!

Longtime listener, first time caller! I have been reading the YLF blog for maybe 8 years and the forum for a year or two.

I'm in my late 30s, and I am a public sector administrative professional in the mid-Atlantic/ Southeast US. I work in a business casual environment, and my specific role is a little more physical than traditional desk jobs, but I often dress dressier than the position and the office requires, simply because I love clothes.

I've always loved anything related to fashion and clothing. I could almost say it has been a lifelong obsession that has led to an unnecessarily abundant wardrobe. I have finally taken the plunge to join the community because I want to channel that passion in more healthy venues rather than just buying clothes. There's absolutely nothing wrong with buying clothes, but I now know that I often purchase for the wrong reasons. For one thing, I am the embodiment of the 80/20 rule, I have a few pieces that I wear over and over, so shopping often serves to fill emotional voids rather than those in my closet. I am working on remixing and shopping my closet and developing other hobbies to re-focus my energies. Other than 2 - 3 new shoes (because I've literally worn my shoes to the ground; the holes in some of my shoes would make a Dicken's novel character pity me...) and some underpinnings, I plan not to shop for a while until can healthily separate aesthetic appreciation and ownership. That said, I am looking forward to joining in on the discussions. I so rarely have the opportunity to discuss these topics with my friends.

Hello, I am Tanya

I am working as editor-in-chief and responsible for my team. The eldest among three sisters with a graduate from the University of Singapore. I am 5' 4" and just love talking, shopping, and discussing and doing things related to Fashion and clothing.

I do not have a favorite color. I love all the colors from dark, dim, light, and every shade of them. I just cannot pick one outfit and whenever I enter the mall all the colors just have some sort of invisible mind talk with them. :'D

I am a shopperholic and it's not like I really wear the stuff I buy, But it's just that I can't resist buying. The passionate colors talk to me saying as if they were made to come into my closet. I dont have much obsession with shoes, and probably I wear the same shoes over and over again. Due to this habit, I have the habit of getting shoes damaged and I remember I was always scolded by my mom because I just can not take care of 'em. But clothes are on a completely different level. I love clothes and earrings. Even when I am writing this I am wearing a little white

medium-sized

pearl earrings that are my favs.

Hello! I'm a longtime lurker and beneficiary of Angie's wisdom, as a number of her finds have followed me home. I enjoy fashion and have a good understanding of my body type, but I also have a tendency to fall back on wearing the same thing over and over rather than experimenting. I work in an office where I have the flexibility to either dress more casually or in business formal attire, depending on what's going on each day.

I'm 5'3, size 8, late 40's, and fluctuate between regular and petite sizes with apple tendencies, a straight figure with a short neck, and broad shoulders. I would probably be described as having "winter" coloring (I do best with black, red, fuschia, jewel tones, etc.). I have always loved silver/white gold, and a few years ago incorporated rose gold jewelry into the mix.

I was diagnosed with a serious illness about six months ago and am working to build a grace-filled life that includes more of what I enjoy....and I absolutely enjoy everything about the YLF website and appreciate the opportunity to be more involved with it.

Hi all, I'm Lyida. I live in Livermore.

I'm planing to renew my wardrope

For work i usually wear casual staff like jeans and t-shirts. I love black clothing but i have to wear some colours otherwise colleagues always comment on it ans ask silly questions like who died etc

well my plan is to buy some pieces in order to wear them everywhere except work, clothes in the style of a preppy goth girl

i prefer black like i said, i would like my clothes to be modern and classy but with a goth twist

i'm in my 30's and i like to keep it simple but i don't want to be dressed like everyone around me and on the other hand i don't have a fortune to spend on clothing

hope you got the impression of what i'm looking for

your fashion advices would be highly appreciated!

thank you

Hello my name is Shannon and I live in Texas and I work in the construction industry and my wardrobe has really gone down Hill over the last 10 years

I am looking for inspiration ideas advice and assistance on getting comfortable with fashion again and learning what looks good on me now that I'm in my fifties versus what I was comfortable wearing in my thirties.

I am petite 5' tall and reasonably proportioned and I have a very difficult time finding clothes that fit me and look age appropriate for an adult but not as if I'm a really, old, old lady. I usually get stuck in between the junior girls department and the women's petite department that has very very few options. I'm a bit too curvy to wear junior clothing correctly and usually the women's petite selection makes me sad.

Hey. I am Wilfred and proud to be here. I live in Nairobi Kenya and am passionate about Salsa Dancing, Fashion, and Blogging.

Hello! I'm Laura, and I followed YLF waaaay back in 2009, but got out of the habit of reading when I was in graduate school. I have a new job to dress for (a step up, so more suiting and less casual!) and a postpartum body to consider this year, so I thought I'd jump into the forum as I try new things. Since I'm buying a lot and rediscovering how to dress my body as it is, I'm taking much more daring fashion choices because, well, why not? I'd love to have feedback on a few things once I post outfits since I'm not sure if I have a look down - for example, wearing cropped trousers with ankle boots with the most flattering proportions for me.

I'm moving from Oregon to Utah for my job, so I'm also figuring out dressing for a new climate! I look forward to getting to know everyone!

Hi all! I just joined this site, and have enjoyed reading all of your introductions. I’m Cara. I love clothes, fashion, color, gorgeous fabrics, etc.!

After having been a rather zaftig hourglass through the majority of my life, I (deliberately) lost a huge amount of excess weight over the past 2.5 years. It has been somewhat startling to find myself, while still an hourglass, to have morphed into having an inverted triangle tendency as well. I am 66, just over 5’8”, and a size XS/2.

Though I worked as a model back when the earth was cooling (I was a bit taller 45 years ago too), I had almost no clothing left from that time which might now fit (though one favorite dress remained). I had a closet full of sizes which were utterly too big on me, so have spent the past year or so heavily and quite joyfully replenishing my wardrobe.

I work for myself, primarily via the computer and phone. I could hypothetically spend virtually every day in pajamas, but I love pretty clothing, so choose instead to enjoy dressing up a bit. I live in an extremely outdoorsy city where fleece, flannel, denim, hiking boots, Ugg boots, and flip-flops (!) predominate. I don’t fit in, sartorially, but I don’t care. I like how I look, and don’t mind standing out a bit.

I favor fitted clothes, especially fitted waists; wrap dresses, wrap and surplice tops and sweaters, v-necks; boat necks (my inner ballerina loves these), beautiful wools and cashmeres, pencil skirts, as well as some floaty, pretty silk skirts that flounce and flutter a little as I walk. I have no good trousers at all - this is one area I would like to remedy. I have black leggings and a variety of jeans, but honestly I usually prefer skirts and dresses, so wear these more often. A couple of gorgeous, summery 50’s-60’s vintage-inspired frocks have made their way into my closet. They’re anomalies, but fun. Boots! How I love them! Knee high, over-the-knee, suede or kid, with heels or with low riding heels; booties; high heels of all sorts and colors, and pointy-toed flats. After wearing almost all black for at least 35 years, I have happily reintroduced color into my wardrobe. Favorite colors include black (of course!), cream/winter white, true ruby reds, cherry, black raspberry, pinks of all persuasions except for the palest (it washes me right out), rich purples, lavenders and orchids, Aquamarine, Jade, turquoise, hydrangea and plumbago blues; some cinnamons, ambers and metallics; subtle ombré’ greys, etc. I don’t look at all good in camel, unless it’s not close to my face. I like many florals and botanical prints, some paisleys, and I still adore leopard and cheetah prints! If I were to identify my style using five words, I would choose elegant, feminine, well-bred, classic, yet also with a creative/rock-n-roll vibe. These last few qualities sound as if they cancel each other out! But I try to pull them off.

Hope I didn’t just put everyone to sleep with this time! I’m happy to be here. Thanks for reading.
