Let's say I take a huge step and get some pants that aren't black. Well, no floral crazy pants...yet...but I've found these super great summer pants at Athleta and so far really like my black pair. If I decide to get another pair, should I go for navy or grey? The grey has a subtle stripe...I can hardly tell even magnified...but I don't know how obvious it would be IRL.

Since I haven't posted a WIW for so long, my main colors are berry, cobalt, red and green. I think they would go with either. I have a few blue print tops that I've always thought go just fine with black, but maybe that's a vote for navy. There have been a few instances in the past that I've passed on a print I liked because of not having navy pants. And the stripes may be a vote against grey...but overall I feel more like a grey person than a navy person! So that's why I'm asking for help deciding.

Sounds like either navy or gray would work with your wardrobe, in theory. However, I find color so difficult to judge online, especially blues and grays. The tone can look right on your screen and then what is delivered to your door is something radically different. Is there an Athleta store near you so you can see colors in real life? Can you order both and do an outfit creation session at home?

For what it is worth, I have navy Athleta pants purchased last spring. Last year's navy had more yellow/green tones which is limiting for me as my closet is full of berry tones. They still work with some things but not all. For example, I think they would clash with the lovely blouse in your finds.

Do let us know what you decide to do.

I have several solid flint grey bottoms from athleta. It's a cool blue grey tone, and I would say it's a medium intensity tone. I'm not sure what the stripe version looks like but the picture makes the stripe look subtle and low contrast. I think either the grey stripe or navy would work with your wardrobe, it's a matter of personal preference.

Either's really fine, but I'll be in the minority and vote grey.

I also have a closet full of cool tones and just find I prefer to swap in grey for black more than navy for black -- just like the combos that result. But then I find navy bottoms often have a prepster vibe that isn't me.

I know you've struggled to find pants so maybe you need all 3 colors! Glad you've found a style that works; I really like my pair too.

Here are my random thoughts on the topic--maybe not all that helpful, I'll admit.
I find I wear my charcoal pants more in the cooler months and navy more in the warmer months.
Are there tops that you find you're not wearing as much as you would if you had pants in a different color than black? If so, which color could help that situation?
I might be a little leery of stripes. They can give a slight menswear/suiting vibe that might be harder to create outfits with.
Once you break out of the black habit, you may find you want a second non-black pair, whichever ones you start out with.

My vote is for the navy because I think it'll be smashing with your brighter colors, especially with a touch of white thrown in. Also agree with Sharan's thought that the charcoal might be great for cooler weather; would nicely mute those same bright, clear shades.

I have a weirdly difficult time matching blue pants to shoes! So I pick grey although both are nice...

Is this a free shipping free returns situation? If so, I say order both. I vote blue, but the blue has to be right. As does the grey. And I think you'll have to see them irl to know.

I'm basing my reply purely on the new top that you show here. I think the navy pants work better with that top, and, of course, they will mix beautifully with all your other colours. Also, I think of navy as a summer colour, so you'd get plenty of wears from the blue pants over the next few months.

If possible, I would follow Elizabeth P's suggestion to order both to see which work best with the rest of your things.

I vote grey because I find it an easier neutral to work with than navy. I think berry and red colours can look a bit drab with navy, at least without a third lighter colour added in. Grey and green look really good together. I also think navy can look pretty much the same as black but grey is a definite change.

Another vote for navy. I also tend to wear more navy in the summer and charcoal in the winter.

This is so split! I think I will have to do the order both and see suggestion. Athleta is extremely easy on returns, they rival Nordstrom in that way. Both colors are backordered, so it will be awhile.

That's a tough one since grey and navy are color staples in my wardrobe. Both are great and would be awesome for any wardrobe, but I'm thinking I'm leaning more in favor of the grey. Which ever you end up choosing, if they work out you should think about getting a pair in the other color!
